The symposium is designed for a general audience and it gives members of the general public a chance to meet and discuss a contemporary topic with scholars, experts and other audience members. This year's topic was entitled, "Health and Happiness," and it featured scholars, experts and those involved in the medical system discussing the the age-old question of what makes us happy and how our health affects our happiness. The one-day symposium attracted an audience of approximately 430 people. 141898 118224 0 HUMANITIES PROJECT GRANTS: Grants were awarded to non-profit organizations across North Dakota which supported public humanities projects (such as history, language, literature, philosophy, ethics, jurisprudence, archaeology, comparative religion, art history & criticism, ethnic studies, social sciences, etc.). The NDHC has two types of grants available for humanities projects: quick grants ($1,500 or less) and large grants (greater than $1,500). The NDHC awarded 21 quick grants and 14 large grants (a total of 35 grants). 46890 0 4704 BRINGING HUMANITIES TO LIFE: These programs are designed to have an open discussion about a contemporary topic in a relaxed setting which encourages many different viewpoints. All applicants are required to submit a written application describing their proposed project in detail and a project budget which conforms to NDHC guidelines. Successful applicants sign a written grant agreement and submit reports, both program and financial, at the end of the project detailing their activities and expenses. Any significant changes to the project budget must receive written approval in advance. Grantees which are subject to the audit requirements found in the OMB Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards are required to inform the NDHC of any findings which are relevant to the expenditure of NDHC grant funds. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7a The Governor of the State of North Dakota has the authority to appoint up to 6 members to the North Dakota Humanities Council board, but in no case may the members appointed by the ND Governor exceed 25% of the current board. During the fiscal year covered by this return the board contained 3 members appointed by the ND Governor. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The form 990 and related schedules were prepared by the Associate Director and reviewed by the Executive Director. An electronic copy of the form 990 and all related schedules were emailed to the NDHC Board of Directors and comments were solicited before the return was filed with the IRS. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c At each meeting of the NDHC Board of Directors actual and potential conflicts of interest are discussed and ruled on by the NDHC Chair before discussions and voting on grant applications and potential projects take place. Any board members deemed to have a conflict of interest are excused from the meeting during the discussion and abstain from voting on the relevant grant application or project. the Chair also monitors the outside activities of the Executive Director to ensure no actual or potential conflicts exists. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The compensation of the Executive Director and the Associate Director are reviewed annually and any adjustments are approved by the NDHC Board of Directors. The NDHC Executive Committee conducts annual performance reviews and takes in consideration the salary survey data for similar positions provided by the Federation of State Humanities Councils. All NDHC board actions related to compensation are recorded in the board meeting minutes. The most recent performance review and compensation adjustments took place at the October, 2018 NDHC Board of Directors meeting. Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 Extra copies of the audited NDHC financial statements are printed annually and are available to the public upon request. Copies of the governing documents (articles of incorporation, bylaws, policies, etc.) are also available to the general public and paper copies will be mailed to anyone who requests them. Form 990, Part IX, Line 11g HUMANITIES SCHOLAR HONORARIUMS: Fees paid to authors, historians, writers, and other humanities professionals for research, magazine articles, program coordination and humanities presentations.
