Funding for primary prevention comes from federal and state government contracts SAMHSA and Maine Prevention Services/UNE Substance Misuse Prevention. However, these funds do not cover all needs. HCCA identifies gaps, creates strategic plans based on best practice and applies for additional resources to foundations/philanthropies. An identified gap in tobacco was resources to support pregnant women to quit smoking. HCCA now convenes Reaching More Moms RMM designed to address the gap and help moms before, during and after pregnancy to quit smoking. RMM has been funded by both the March of Dimes/Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation and Maine Cancer Foundation. HCCAs Prime for Life class for young adults, ages 18-20, who have violated substance use law, is an early intervention to educate the offenders. 313821 2384 Eating Healthy, Being Active - Healthy eating and being active are key components for a lifetime of health. HCCA is funded through a mix of federal, state, and foundation grants and contracts to provide SNAP nutrition education, work with schools, worksites, and communities to integrate healthy food and activities into daily living that support students, families and employees to practice healthier eating and activities. HCCA has been a leader in organizing Farm to School/Institution and partnering with diverse organizations to get local foods onto more food-serving institutional menus. LPP The cities of Augusta and Gardiner comprise one of five high risk communities for higher rates of lead poisoning for infants and small children connected with pre-1950 multi-unit housing. Much of the LPP work is carried out by and informed by community partners, and changes happen at the policy and environmental levels, through education and interventions. The project works closely with Maine CDCs Lead Poisoning Prevention program and is funded through fees on paint sales. YEE project works in three areas and is based on Social Emotional Learning SEL research, building community leadership and advocacy skills, and resilience.
