Funds received from foundations are credited to the appropriate account for future disbursement. The account is a Restricted Fund. All awards from those funds must be approved by the Executive Director using recommendations from the Governance Committee and NTE internal review committee. The South Ward Community Schools Initiative (SWCSI) unites educators, families, and community partners to be responsible for five specific schools in Newarks South Ward. NTE submits a proposal to Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ) with a proposed budget developed by each school for the school year. CFNJ issues a grant to NTE for the continuation of SWCSI activities in the five schools for the school year. The Abbott Leadership Institute (ALI), in partnership with the Newark Trust for Education, provides a five-week training on Parent Engagement through Social Emotional Learning for Newark parents and caregivers across five schools. The training is designed to give parents the tools needed to support their childrens social and emotional competency development while also assessing their own social and emotional challenges and methods to overcome them. ALI submits a proposal together with an itemized budget which is approved by the Executive Director. All receipts to the Funders Collaborative and SWCSI are recorded as revenue in separate Cash Accounts and identified as restricted funds. All grant awards from these funds are tracked in subsidiary ledgers that identifies disbursements by date, Grantee, Foundation and Dollar amount. A Sub Ledger/Summary is prepared monthly for each initiative, identifying the date, Grantee, Foundation, disbursements and balances. Award letters specifying the grant amount for each school/organization under the Funders Collaborative, SWCSI and ALI are approved by the Executive Director and issued to grantees along with a check. Design Safe and Supportive Schools The Trust believes that schools must create and sustain the conditions that support students' mental, physical and emotional wellbeing for effective learning to take place. We leverage current grant programs to create a learning network of school leaders focused on whole school strategies that support students' mental, emotional, and social development in service of maximizing learning. Current programs under the Safe and Supportive Schools Initiative include the Funders' Collaborative for High-Quality Schools (Funders' Collaborative) is a network of local, regional, and national funders committed to providing high-quality public-school options for all Newark students. Develop Effective, Efficient & Responsive Systems At the Trust we believe that systems must be designed to support student learning with the internal capacity and resources required to be effective. In light of the city's transition to local control we are exploring potential strategies to support residents' knowledge acquisition about the roles and responsibilities of the Board of Education. The goal is to increase positive participation in School Board meetings and increase the pool of residents interested in serving on Newark's Board of Education. Another element to developing effective, efficient and responsive systems is the identification of partners with which to collaborate as we work to develop, build and promote the use of a citywide data system (data warehouse and case management system). Line 4A South Ward Community Schools Initiative (SWCSI) South Ward Community Schools are Newark Public Schools that unite educators, families, and community partners to be responsible for the following five schools: Malcolm X, Shabazz High School, BRICK Avon Academy, BRICK Peshine Academy, Louise A. Spencer Elementary School, and Belmont Runyon School. As administrators of SWCSI the Trust has established a management team to oversee the initiative with representation from the City of Newark, Newark Public Schools and the Trust. The Community Schools strategy includes the following six key elements: 1) High Expectations for learning supported by: a. Clear Instructional Vision b. Rigorous Instructional Practice c. Integrated Student Supports 2) High Capacity, Sustainable Partnerships and Resource Coordination/Integration 3) Data-Driven Decision-Making 4) Capacity to Address Student Health and Mental Health 5) Quality, Aligned, and Sustainable Expanded Learning Time/Opportunities 6) Community of Engaged, Supportive Adults Line 4b Collaboration and Leadership The Trust partners with many agencies to make a significant impact in the city of Newark. The Funders Collaborative for High-Quality Schools (Funders' Collaborative) is a network of local, regional, and national funders committed to providing high-quality public school options for all Newark students. The Funders' Collaborative supports the design, creation, and sustainability of high quality school options by aligning philanthropic investments with district strategy for maximum impact. Since its inception in 2011, the Funders Collaborative for High-Quality School Options has provided schools with a strong platform to advance effective system reform efforts in Newark, while also allowing for greater collaboration and alignment among funders. As an additional benefit, the Collaborative also establishes a vehicle and framework that aligns, focuses, and coordinates resources to improve school quality and fosters a mutually supportive learning community of school leaders across the district. The Trust is currently focused on broadening the impact of the Funders Collaborative to ensure that grants are responsive to the multidimensional needs of schools. One of the most common needs identified by school leaders in Newark is mental health services and social emotional support for students and staff. In response the Funders Collaborative has continued to allocate resources towards strengthening and improving social-emotional learning programs and trauma informed services in schools. Line 4c Parent Child Home Program(PCHP) The Trust understands that quality public education for all children cannot be achieved without ensuring that every child has robust all-around support to thrive prior to entering the 3rd grade. To help strengthen the prenatal to eight continua in Newark, the Trust is partnering with ParentChild+ to implement a pilot for one hundred families using their evidenced-based model for early literacy and child development.
