HRS educates people about rabbits, provides services and supplies for the care of rabbits, and provides low-cost rabbit spay/neuter in order to reduce the number of abandoned rabbits. 0 1 382074 0 15018 Adoption program, including rabbit care expenses & veterinary care: HRS took in 175 rabbits in CA. New adoptive homes were found for 167 rabbits. Sanctuary was provided for 43 rabbits. 21 municipal shelters and humane societies were assisted in CA. 175 incoming rabbits were given health exams and were spayed/neutered before being placed for adoption. All sick and injured animals were given veterinary care and medical treatment. Construction of on-site surgery suite was completed in 2019, part-time vet and registered veterinary technician hired, and starting in August, all surgeries performed in-house, including spay/neuters, amputations, dental extractions, and enucleations. 192 vet exams provided to rabbits from other rabbit rescue groups. 14400 0 0 Emergency Rescue & Chapter Grants: 13 Chapter Grants and Emergency Rescue Grants were made to 13 other rabbit rescue organizations to provide vet care for a total 1,002 rabbits, and includes one HRS chapter for repairs to their facility, so they can continue helping rabbits. 20839 0 0 Education program: Education program included educational presentations, free rabbit educational materials were mailed and handed out in vet offices, at events, and at the headquarters in Richmond, CA. Two issues of the House Rabbit Journal were produced and distributed to members. Rabbit health and care consultations through phone calls, emails, and social media. Participated in and/or presented or tabled at 8 conferences: NAVC, SE Bunfest, Sonoma Bunfest, Exoticscon, San Diego Bunnyfest, Midwest Bunfest, Vancouver Rabbit Rescue & Advocacy's Rabbit Festival, Best Friends National Conference. Ran an educational short PSA video about not buying a rabbit at Easter, prior to the holiday weekend, using Facebook ad placements targeting people in states with chain retailers selling rabbits. For each bill, we discussed the bill with colleagues at other animal organizations, set up a page on our website, and created graphics, and posted them to social media. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The 990 form and all relevant schedules were reviewed and filled in by the Executive Director Anne Martin, and reviewed by Full Charge Bookkeeper/Acctg. Mgr. Leah Elton before submitting to the IRS. After filing, the 990 is provided to the board. Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 18 Forms 1023 & 990 are available for public inspection at GuideStar.org Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 Governing documents are available at rabbit.org and Financial Statements are available at GuideStar.org We had originally had our voluntary audit with an external CPA firm scheduled for 3/9/20, with intent to file before the May 15, 2020 deadline. However, the week prior, Executive Director Anne Martin became ill with COVID-19 symptoms that lasted 6 weeks, necessitating postponing the audit, and filing an extension of time to file the 990, so that we could reschedule the audit and file the 2019 990 by the November 16, 2020 deadline. Anne Martin mailed Form 8868 "Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File an Exempt Organization Return" on 4/22/2020, via First-Class USPS mail using a Pitney Bowes mail machine to print the postage. The paper form was mailed to Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Ogden, UT 84201-0045. We have a photocopy of the mailing label showing the date mailed. We were able to reschedule the audit in late August 2020, and received the audit report 11/5/2020. However, 10/26/20, we received notice CP259A from the IRS stating "You didn't file a required annual tax rerturn," in reference to the 2019 990. This was when we learned that our Form 8868 requesting an extension must not have been received. Upon receiving the audit report 11/5/20, we promptly completed the 990 by the 11/16/20 deadline, as planned. Due to staff illness with COVID-19 symptoms in March through April 2020, and subsequent USPS difficulties, as well as our belief that we were, in fact, filing on time with our requested extension that we had mailed on time, we hope you will consider this reasonable cause and waive any penalties.
