In the event, we explored how design can benefit local manufacturing. We engaged four local manufacturers in hands-on design thinking exercises with 50 local participants in the Cincinnati area. We also convened over a dozen practitioners the following day to explore how we build stronger bridges between the design and manufacturing ecosystems, and how to create a network of service providers to support them. Another goal was to gather useful insight from the models featured above and empower our broader community with the information they need to begin addressing space needs for production businesses in their cities. It is the first of what we hope to be a series of similar UMA initiatives focusing on real estate. Form 990, Part III, Line 4d We also convened a group of policymakers, investors, and other thought-leaders in the capital access space through a Capital Access Advisory Board CAAB. These leaders may not serve manufacturing-related businesses directly, but their expertise on capital needs and diversity, equity, and inclusion DEI can inform and scale the work of the practitioner cohort. This Advisory Board will help us ensure that Pathways to Patient Capital builds upon and benefits from the best research and practices in the field to date. Form 990, Part III, Line 4d UMA spoke and/or presented in over a dozen conferences in 2019 including advocating for entrepreneurial ecosystem building as a strategy, as well as manufacturing, on Capitol Hill with the Kauffman Foundation participating in and winning the Acumen Accelerator Program speaking at Realizing Inclusion and Industry 4.0 in Chicago speaking at the Second Kauffman Foundation ESHIP Summit Katy presented at the Forward Cities Conference in Pittsburgh keynoting at the IEDC conferenceand hosting and curating a panel at the Reclaiming Vacant Properties conference. Form 990, Part III, Line 4d UMA began working with a cohort of innovative capital access providers to strengthen their programs and broaden their expertise on mission-driven capital in our Pathways to Patient Capital Project. UMA sees the exciting beginnings of a solution to capital access gaps for manufacturing businesses and communities of color through multi-stakeholder approaches to capital deployment that can be developed and supported through a peer-learning, or cohort model. We work closely with the practitioner cohort to build on existing programs and create new pathways to capital access by uniting a range of capital providers such as CDFIs, public agencies, financial institutions, educational institutions, impact investors, and place based philanthropies that are working to address the capital needs of small scale manufacturers with a racial equity lens.
