<Desc>Media & AwarenessinterACTs media & awareness raising work promotes sensitive, accurate, own-voices coverage of intersex issues in journalism and entertainment media. interACTs work was featured in 90 + pieces of media coverage in 2019, including. 2019 came with several major milestones, many of which included interACT Youth voices:Youth members took over Instagram stories for influencers Jen Winston, Adam Eli of Voices 4, and The Advocate, and were published in 13 major media outlets. With Intersex Justice Project, interACT created a list of 26 ally tips that was widely circulated, with one tip released each day in October leading up to the 26th.In honor of the day, interACT collaborated with Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar who created original art of Stevonnie, the shows intersex character. The image generated a buzz online, with many fans of the show reaching out to ask, whats this intersex thing all about?Staff and Youth members were tapped to consult on projects such as Voxs video coverage of Caster Semenya and sex testing discrimination in sports, New York Times coverage of the discovery that war hero Casimir Pulaski was intersex, anti-transgender and anti-intersex bills in Iowa, and a mounting federal effort by the Trump administration to enforce rigidly oppressive definitions of sex and gender. CNN released an in-depth video piece on the Lohman family (Eric Lohman is an interACT board member) and their pushback against infant clitoral and vaginal surgery on their child, as well as Executive Director Kimberlys personal intersex story. The CNN app sent push notifications to over 7 million users!</Desc>

<Desc>Law and PolicyOur law and policy team allies with top human rights and legal organizations in the US and worldwide to advance intersex rights of intersex youth. In 2019 the program accomplished:In December of 2019, the Massachusetts Medical Society passed a resolution originally brought forward by one of our medical student interns and supported by a medical advisory group member, on which our Executive Director Kimberly testified in support. A two-year effort, this policy asks medical providers in Massachusetts to provide care that seeks to foster the well-being of the child and of the adult the child will become; respects the rights of the patient to participate in decisions and, except when life threatening circumstances require emergency intervention, defers medical or surgical intervention until the child is able to participate in decision making; and provides psychosocial support to promote patient and family well-being.Continued advocacy at the state and local levels to implement government policies that recognize intersex human rights and aim to protect youth from nonconsensual interventions (continued relationship-building and collaboration with large LGBTQ, legal, and civil rights organizations to stand with us on the ground in key strategic states and cities; and laying further groundwork and drafting policies in CA, NY, OR, RI, and MA).The filing of two legislative initiatives in New York: a state-level enforcement bill to delay infant surgeries supported by Senator Brad Hoylman and a New York City Council bill filed by Councilmember Daniel Dromm to mandate that the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene produce and disseminate the first-ever intersex public education campaign to prevent unnecessary surgery on intersex infants. In Oregon, interACT organized a legislative advocacy day at which two Youth members, accompanied by our Youth Program Manager and Staff Attorney, educated lawmakers at the Oregon Capitol in Salem. The group presented an intersex workshop hosted by Rep. Rob Nosse, testified at an informational hearing before the House Healthcare Committee, and met with key staff to inform them on issues impacting the intersex community and potential next steps to protect this population. The U.S. House proposed the Equality Act, a piece of legislation to address LGBTQ+ discrimination. Thanks to the work of the interACT Law & Policy team and the Equality Act sponsors, the act explicitly includes intersex status. In October 2019, the Supreme Court heard several pivotal cases on sex discrimination. interACT submitted an amicus brief to support Aimee Stephens, a transgender woman who was fired for transitioning. Youth member Bria joined our Law & Policy Director Al on the steps of the Supreme Court and spoke at an organized rally! In a historic first, intersex rights were mentioned in not one, but two presidential candidates LGBTQI+ platforms. Elizabeth Warrens campaign reached out to interACT for consultation. Pete Buttigiegs campaign cited interACTs 2017 report with Human Rights Watch.</Desc>

<Desc>interACT YouthinterACT Youth, is our intersex youth advocacy collective, empowering young intersex advocates with connection, leadership skills, and a platform to raise their voices. Youth voices are at the heart and soul of our mission to honor intersex bodily integrity and autonomy in decision-making. For Intersex Awareness Day 2019, interACT featured Youth members sharing their stories via a new #MyIntersexBody campaign centering individuals speaking out against surgeries without individual consent, with graphics shared over 6,000 times from interACT's social channels. In October 2019 an interACT Youth member became the first, out, intersex person to speak publicly about intersex related issues on the steps of the Supreme Court.</Desc>
