In honor of our founder and her initial motivation to give her students the boost they need to move up the economic ladder through education, the new program is called the Elizabeth Weal Move Up Initiative. Upward Scholars has always helped students overcome barriers to an education that fits into their lives and goals and the Move Up Initiative is an extension of this commitment. The initiative currently includes two programs - NannyUp and Habla Mas!. NannyUp gives talented, nurturing childcare providers the opportunity to advance in their careers as nannies, which benefits them as well as the families they serve. In partnership with The Institute for Families and Nannies (TIFFAN), NannyUp offers workshops to give students the skills they need to get a job as a nanny and maximize their compensation (both salary and benefits) once they have a job. NannyUp provides students with career development support to take advantage of the skills they gained in college and move up in a career path they love. Habla Mas!, which means "speak more" in Spanish, provides Upward Scholars students the opportunity to make a steady source of income as Spanish language coaches. Students are registered with Upward Scholars and provide their account number when they need books, parking passes and food vouchers. The school sends a bill to Upward Scholars and we reimburse the school directly. Bus passes are purchased by Upward Scholars staff and made available to students. Cash scholarships are monitored as follows; Speakers Bureau- paid after a student gives a talk about their experience. Car stipend- the two students who receive this award are required to send a picture with themselves and the car. Completer awards- given to students who complete their studies and submit documentation showing this. Gas allowance and books & parking- reimbursed directly to students after they submit receipts. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b Form 990 is sent to all board members. At the next board meeting the Treasurer or accountant is available to review and answer questions. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 Board reviews compensation for Executive Director annually and makes the decision about compensation.
