During 2018, DCFPI filed articles of incorporation in the District of Columbia to establish a stand-alone entity. DCFPI also applied for recognition as a tax-exempt organization under IRC Section 501(c)(3) with the IRS. Although DCFPI was permitted to operate as a tax-exempt organization while its application was pending with the IRS, the Center and DCFPI agreed that the Center would act as DCFPI's fiscal sponsor until DCFPI received tax exempt recognition. DCFPI received tax-exemption on July 31, 2019, after which the fiscal sponsorship arrangement expired; and the Center transferred certain assets and liabilities to the newly formed DCFPI entity as it is no longer a program of the Center.
