The initiative, launched in 2019, was spurred by the increasing loss of visual journalists across news publishing platforms, which over the past decade across the United States have had over a 50% staff decline. In 2020, CatchLight supported three Local Fellows (100% BIPOC, 33% female or gender nonconforming) working with three newsrooms: The Salinas Californian, Bay City News, and the San Francisco Public Press. They published 31 stories in these news outlets addressing the impacts of COVID on farm working families and low income residents, housing, education, and food insecurity. Our Impact Fund, founded in 2020, lends additional support for Fellows projects over a longer period of time, such as for CatchLight Fellow Aida Mulunehs efforts to support the talents of emerging African artists through her masterclass workshops.
