<Desc>THE YEAR THAT ENDED IN MID 2021 WAS A YEAR OF REPURPOSING AND EVALUATION AND PREPARATION FOR OUR BOARD AND ALL OF OUR REGULAR VOLUNTEERS. WHILE WE WERE NOT ABLE TO TAKE LARGE "IN PERSON" TEAMS IN THE FIELD DUE TO COVID 19, WE WERE ABLE TO CONTINUE OUR CONTACTS WITH THE BELIZE GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP, MEDICAL LEADERSHIP AND VOLUNTEERS. WE HAVE BUILT THESE RELATIONSHIPS AS A BOARD AND AS VOLUNTEERS SINCE 2004, AND THE RELATIONSHIPS RUN DEEP. ALL OF OUR BELIZE CONTACTS NEEDED THE ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT TO GET THROUGH ONE OF THEIR TOUGHEST YEARS ON RECORD. WITH VERY LITTLE ICU SPACE IN BELIZE THEY HAD VERY LITTLE WAY TO COMBAT SERIOUS CASES OF COVID. THIS CREATED TERROR IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE. OUR REGION IN NORTHERN BELIZE LED THE COUNTRY IN VACCINATIONS AND TAKING VACCINATIONS TO SCHOOLS AND ALSO TO VILLAGES VERY PROACTIVELY. WE WERE NOT THERE TO HELP IN PERSON, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT AND APPLAUD THEIR BATTLE. WE LIKE TO THINK THIS MADE A DIFFERENCE FOR THE MEDICAL PROVIDERS AND THE VOLUNTEERS AND PATIENTS WE KNOW AND LOVE IN BELIZE. RATHER THAN GIVING UP ALL HOPE OF RETURNING OR ENDING OUR EFFORTS, THIS HAS BEEN A YEAR TO STRENGTHEN OUR RESOLVE AND CLARIFY OUR MISSION. WE ARE TASKED TO FILL MEDICAL GAPS AND BUILD MEDICAL CAPACITY AND OTHER RELATED SUPPORT IN ORDER TO LEAD BELIZE TO A TIME WHEN WE ARE NOT NEEDED. THIS YEAR WAS A YEAR THAT WE HAVE WORKED OUT COMMITMENTS FROM LOCAL PROVIDERS IN OHIO TO DO ONLINE EDUCATION FOR BELIZE MEDICAL PROVIDERS AND DONATE MORE MEDICAL SUPPORTS FOR TRAINING. WE NORMALLY DELIVER OUR SUPPORT VIA SHORT TERM MISSION TRIPS INSPIRED BY THE TEACHINGS OF CHRIST, BUT WHEN WE CANNOT BE THERE IN PERSON, WE HAVE FOUND WAYS TO ENCOURAGE AND BETTER PLAN FOR THIS NEXT COMING YEAR. WE WERE ALSO ABLE TO NEGOTIATE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL'S PRO BONO SUPPORT FOR A VERY COMPLICATED SURGERY, WITH THE YOUNG PATIENT COMING FOR AN EVALUATION AT YEAR'S END AND RETURNING IN THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR FOR A MAJOR BACK SURGERY. THIS WAS A PATIENT WE HAD CONVINCED CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL TO PERFORM A CLEFT SURGERY ON YEARS AGO. OUR LOCAL TEAM MEMBERS WHO COULD NOT TRAVEL TO BELIZE, WORKED ON ALL THE LOGISTICS TO PROVIDE MEALS AND TRANSPORTATION AND HOUSING FOR THIS PATIENT AND HIS FAMILY AND ALL THE RELATED SUPPORTS. THIS PATIENT WAS NOT ABLE TO HAVE THE SURGERY IN BELIZE, DUE TO HIS ALLERGIC REATION TO ANESTHESIA AND THE COMPLICATION OF SUBSEQUENT SURGERIES NEEDED. OUR VISION IS THAT SOMEDAY BELIZE WILL BE SELF SUFFICIENT FOR MEDICAL SUPPORT AND OUR FOCUS WILL EXPAND TO OTHER COUNTRIES, BUT FOR NOW WE HAVE DOUBLED OUR RESOLVE TO RETURN, AS PATIENTS ARE NOT GETTING THE SURGERIES OR MEDICAL EVALUATIONS WE NORMALLY PROVIDE AND THE HEALTH CONSEQUENCES ARE COMPILING FOR THESE STRANDED AND ISOLATED PATIENTS IN A COUNTRY MOSTLY SHUT DOWN ECONOMICALLY AND HEALTH WISE AS A CONSEQUENCE OF COVID-19. WE KNOW WE ARE MORE NEEDED THAN EVER AND HAVE OUR NEXT TRIP PLANNED FOR FEBRUARY 2022 TO BEGIN CATCHING UP ON THE BACKLOG OF NEED. THE GOVERNMENT HAS ASKED US TO MULTIPLY TO OTHER VILLAGES AND HOSPITALS AND CITIES AND TO GREATLY EXPAND OUR EDUCATIONAL COMPONENTS. THIS WAS UNTHINKABLE WHEN WE FIRST ARRIVED IN BELIZE AND WERE LOOKED AT AS OUTSIDERS SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO. NOW WE ARE REALLY TRUSTED PARTNERS. WE HAVE ADDED A FORMAL TEAM THIS YEAR OF BELIZE ADVISORS TO FORMALLY ALLOW A CONDUIT OF INFORMATION BACK AND FORTH TO MAKE SURE WE ARE HELPING AND NOT HURTING IN HOW WE SERVE IN BELIZE. OUR VISION AND MISSION REMAIN UNCHANGED AND CLARIFIED AND STRENGTHENED BY THIS TIME OF PLANNING FROM AFAR AND CALLING BY PHONE AND ZOOM.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>THE YEAR THAT ENDED IN MID 2021 WAS A YEAR OF REPURPOSING AND EVALUATION AND PREPARATION FOR OUR BOARD AND ALL OF OUR REGULAR VOLUNTEERS. OUR VISION AND MISSION REMAIN UNCHANGED AND CLARIFIED AND STRENGTHENED BY THIS TIME OF PLANNING FROM AFAR AND CALLING BY PHONE AND ZOOM.</ExplanationTxt>
