This trail, largely following an abandoned logging road, is the first hiking access to Sassafras Mountain from the North Carolina side of the state line, and now provides visitors an option to hike the highpoint rather than drive up. 5428 5000 0 Mount Elbert, Colorado: This money was donated to the U. S. Forest Service in San Isabel National Forest to improve trail access to Mount Elbert, the Colorado state highpoint. The money was largely used to purchase about 70 gabions, which are large sturdy wire cages capable of holding several hundred pounds of rock each, for soil stability purposes. These gabions were emplaced along the South Elbert Trail to stabilize the trail and control erosion. 1222 0 0 Mount Frissell south slope, Connecticut: This money was used to purchase a kiosk and signage. It was intended to erect the kiosk at the trailhead at the MA/CT state line. Unfortunately the pandemic interfered with these plans to erect the kiosk. The Manager shall inspect the easement from time to time, and shall cause to be performed such maintenance as may be necessary. The property owner has been provided the name, address, and contact information for the Manager.
