We learned that many families primary wage earner had either lost their job entirely or had hours reduced significantly. As a result, starting April 2020, with funding from LB Community Foundation, we developed a grocery distribution program providing weekly grocery packs of produce provided by Food Forward and non-perishable goods to over 60 of the neediest families (nearly 250 people) throughout Long Beach. To address the lack of financial resources, in partnership with other community nonprofits, we created the Long Beach Covid-19 Undocumented Fund, distributing over $200,000 to families not eligible for government benefits. We hired several of our young adults to coordinate the program. We also partnered with Habitat LA to implement their tenant assistance program to provide financial assistance to tenants who reside in the Washington neighborhood of Long Beach. Together we distributed over $100,000 in rent relief to qualified community members. 61594 74866 SUMMER PROGRAM: As the coronavirus pandemic continued to unfold, DAYS-LB was able to safely reach out to children and youth by modifying the traditional in-person summer program to an online-based program using Google Classrooms as the host platform. Throughout six weeks, Google Classrooms user-friendly interface allowed teachers to facilitate daily lessons nd activities to students in 1st through 12th grade. Curriculum targeted core academic subjects and other essential subject areas such as building community, promoting healthy relationships and environmental health, and college and carrer exploration. Moreover, the online program nurtured a small group approch that facilitated peer socialization. DAYS-LB has continued to offer online tutoring and Leaders Long Beach, a year-round youth-led leadership program that emerged out of DAYS summer program of 2012. 7576 8500 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: We continue to partner with Cal State University Long Beach Center for Community Engagement and their service-learning program, providing students an opportunity to learn more about community issues, the non-profit world and to share their hidden talents with the community. We worked with 10 service-learning students, and their support was invaluable. They created online activities for the after-school program, the summer program, and the literacy program. They worked to virtually offer academic support, attended a variety of community meetings and offered encouragement to some of our struggling youth. Late in December, DAYS was awarded a COVID-Ed grant which allowed us to continue to support families in the community by providing COVID education opportunities, testing and vaccine information. 1725 9150 LITERACY PROGRAM: In the fall of 2020, DAYS-LB launched Leyendo de familias, facilitated by Lilia Ocampo, a community member and DAYS-LB parent. Under her direction, parents/caregivers learn reading strategies, share and write family stories, encourage parents and children to read aloud, and discuss a variety of educational issues. She has created a safe space for families to share and strengthen family bonds.
