<MissionDesc>TO INVEST IN BETTER LIVES FOR PEOPLE WITH NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES, IN ADIRA'S EARLY YEARS, WE WILL FOCUS PRINCIPALLY, THOUGH NOT EXCLUSIVELY, ON FIVE NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES: ALS, ALZHEIMER'S AND RELATED DEMENTIAS, HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, AND PARKINSON'S DISEASE.AT ADIRA WE ACCELERATE THE DESIGN AND FUNDING OF BETTER, MORE INTEGRATED HELP FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED IT NOW. WE ASSEMBLE A HANDFUL OF DISEASES THAT STRUGGLE WITH MANY OF THE SAME BIG THINGS. WE TAKE THEM OUT OF ISOLATION WHERE THEY'RE DEFINED NOT BY THEIR DIAGNOSIS BUT BY THEIR STRUGGLE. FROM A BIRD'S-EYE VIEW, WE SEE THE COMMON THEMES AND TRENDS. WE SPEAK WITH PEOPLE GOING THROUGH THIS JOURNEY TO DESIGN BETTER PROGRAMS "WITH" THEM, NOT JUST "FOR" THEM. THEN WE FUND THOSE BIGGER, COMMON PROBLEMS WITH WHICH THEY SAY THEY NEED THE MOST HELP. SOME EXAMPLES OF OUR WORK TO DATE FOCUS ON CAREGIVING, NAVIGATION OF DIFFERENT SERVICES, DISABILITY, EQUITY, MEASUREMENTS FOR QUALITY OF LIFE, AND MENTAL HEALTH.</MissionDesc>

<Desc>ADIRA'S PROGRAM ACTIVITIES HAVE FOLLOWED ITS "LISTEN, LEARN, AND THEN ACT" APPROACH TO INVEST IN BETTER LIVES FOR PEOPLE WITH NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES, STARTING WITH FIVE COMMUNITIES: ALS, ALZHEIMER'S AND RELATED DEMENTIAS, HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND PARKINSON'S DISEASE.ADIRA SPOKE WITH AND LEARNED WHICH UNMET NEEDS WERE OF MOST PRIORITY TO PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS, THROUGH HOSTING ONLINE CONVENINGS OF PATIENTS AND GRANTEES; COLLECTING STORIES; JOINING SUPPORT GROUPS, CONDUCTING SURVEYS, AND CO-HOSTING A CAREGIVERS TOWN HALL TALKING TO HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE IN THE NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE SPACE.ADIRA ACTED BY DISTRIBUTING $100,000 TO 12 NONPROFITS AROUND THE COUNTRY WHO COLLECTIVELY REACH MORE THAN 500,000 PEOPLE LIVING WITH NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES AND THEIR CAREGIVERS. THE PROJECTS FAST-TRACKED AN EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO HEALTH-RELATED NON-PROFITS NEEDING TO PIVOT TO CIRCUMSTANCES CAUSED BY COVID-19. ADIRA CONVENED THOSE GRANTEES TO THEN HELP CROWD-SOURCE WHICH PRIORITIES ADIRA SHOULD IMPLEMENT FOR ITS SECOND ROUND OF GRANTS. THROUGH THAT CONVERSATION, AS WELL AS WHAT ADIRA WAS HEARING AND LEARNING FROM PEOPLE IMPACTED BY THESE DISEASES, THREE ISSUES ROSE TO THE TOP WHICH ADIRA SET AS PRIORITY TOPICS FOR ITS SECOND ROUND OF GRANTS, LAUNCHED IN THE FALL OF 2020: 1. CAREGIVER MENTAL HEALTH, 2. CARE COORDINATION AND NAVIGATION, AND 3. SHARING RESOURCES THAT WORK.ADIRA ALSO PARTNERED WITH OTHER NONPROFITS ON THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THREE DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS DIRECTLY SERVING PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS. 1. TO CREATE AN ONLINE, CROWDSOURCED CAREGIVER RESOURCE CLEARINGHOUSE, 2. TO MAP THE NETWORK OF NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE-RELATED ORGANIZATIONS AND SERVICES IN VIRGINIA AND THEN APPLY RESULTS AND LESSONS FOR SCALING THE PROGRAM BEYOND VIRGINIA, 3. TO RECORD AUDIO CONVERSATIONS TO HEAR FIRSTHAND FROM PEOPLE IMPACTED BY THESE DISEASES IN ORDER TO PROMOTE THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THE PERSON FIRST AS AN "INDIVIDUAL", NOT AS A "PATIENT", 4. ADIRA CONTINUED TO MONITOR AND EVALUATE THE EXTENSION OF A FOURTH DEMONSTRATION PROJECT THAT BEGAN IN 2019 WITH THE HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE SOCIETY OF AMERICA REGARDING LEGAL ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT FOR THOSE SEEKING DISABILITY BENEFITS. ADIRA LOOKS TO APPLY LESSONS LEARNED TO OTHER NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE POPULATIONS. ADIRA FURTHER LEARNED HOW TO REFINE AND IMPROVE ITS MODEL BY INVESTING IN RESEARCH WITH TWO MAJOR PROJECTS: 1. ADIRA WORKED WITH GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH TO CONDUCT KEY INFORMANT INTERVIEWS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR APPLYING THE LARGE-SCALE, INTEGRATED MULTILATERAL FUNDING MODELTYPICALLY SEEN IN INFECTIOUS DISEASES SUCH AS HIV/AIDS, TUBERCULOSIS AND OTHERS TO ACHIEVE SIMILARLY TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT FOR NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES, 2. ADIRA WORKED WITH A GROUP OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION EXPERTS TO ENGAGE COMMUNITIES OF COLOR IN DRIVING MORE EFFECTIVE CHANGE IN THE NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE SPACE.</Desc>
