We envision abundant and food sovereign communities. false false 233099 27000 63882 FEAST is a hands- on cooking and garden program reaching over 1,200 students in Asheville and Buncombe County elementary and middle schools to grow, prepare and eat fresh produce as part of their in-school or after-school curriculum. This program has 14 locations including one at Hot Springs Elementary in Madison County. This program was impacted because of COVID from March through December 2020, however we were able to continue to maintain the gardens at each site with grant funding that allowed the school staff and families to receive fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the growing season. We also were able to have plant sales that allowed the school community the ability to access starts for their home gardens. Bountiful Cities works on many collaborative programs supporting the creation of local healthy food systems. In 2020 Bountiful Cities served as one of the lead agents for the Western North Carolina Food Justice Planning Initiative (WNCFJPI) includes 22 counties in Western North Carolina with over 22 agencies, non-profits, funders and community members. The purpose is to have a thriving regenerative, resilient local food system that includes food justice for all in WNC. Asheville/Buncombe Community Garden Network: The network supports over 36 Community Gardens in Asheville/Buncombe County. Bountiful Cities facilitates information and resource sharing, gardening education workshops and monthly Garden Meetups and Newsletter, a tool and seed Library, shared fundraising, and volunteer recruitment, while connecting area gardens with support systems. This program expanded during this year due to COVID working closer with other agencies increasing pathways for food distribution. There was increased funding that supported new gardens and existing gardens with increased capacity and infrastructure. This grant was awarded from the City of Asheville Community Block Development Grant (CBDG). The guidelines are very strict and specific to receive the funding. Detailed reports are required quarterly and funding is released by reimbursement only. This means the City will not release any funds without receipts and detailed explanation on the spending of the funds. Bountiful Cities Program Director Nicole Hinebaugh monitored the implementation of the grant with scheduled frequent meetings to ensure the spending of funds remained within the scope of the grant application and approval. This was the first time our organization entered into this type of grant process, because of the incubation of Patchwork and Bountiful Cities relationship of incubating this urban farm this particular grant was appropriate fitting the need for expansion. From our experience we would not apply for this funding due to the amount of reporting that is required by our agency without adequate compensation from the grant funds. Pt I Line 2 The procedures for monitoring the grant funds were 1) creating a detailed timeline to ensure the spending of funds were complete by the dates of when funding was available and ending date. 2) Schedule dates of meetings with Bountiful Cities staff and Patchwork during the grant cycle to ensure the project and spending were on schedule. Frequent meetings were required for clear communication to determine spending and outcomes were only within the scope of the approved application. 3) list the tasks to be accomplished between meetings 4) during meetings collect and or make copies of all receipts and or invoices appropriate for reimbursement 5) collect all data and information for quarterly reports required by the City to ensure reimbursement 6) final grant report Pt VI, Line 11b The 990 is prepared by independent accountants, reviewed by management, presented to the Board for review, proposed revisions and final approval. Pt VI, Line 12c Enforced as necessary. Any Board Member with a conflict of interest on any specific issue informs the Board and abstains from voting on the issue.
