<Desc>29 PIECES REPORT: The following report is for the time period of Jan. 1 2020 - Dec. 31, 2020. 29 Pieces Artists Making a Kinder World Legacy Initiative is a three-year project to broaden access, awareness and availability of the 29 Pieces: Artists Making a Kinder World original arts education curriculum. The curriculum consists of 20 original lessons, which uniquely use art to teach positive character and social-emotional skills, and then elevates young people's positive voices in the community through public exhibit of their art. This program is in its 14th consecutive year, reaching over 160,000 Dallas-Fort Worth students and 1,200 teachers through lesson facilitation and professional development workshops. Successes In the second year of our effort to broaden awareness and access to our free arts education curriculum, 29 Pieces made the following strides: Website We launched our dedicated website (www. artistsmakingakinderworld.org) in 2019 with 8 core lessons and enrichment supplements. In 2020, we added four additional lesson kits in English and Spanish for free download to any interested person worldwide. Those kits included the: CURIOSITY, FORGIVENESS, DREAMCATCHER, and SOULS HIDDEN lessons. Lesson kits include collateral teaching materials, and all include individual introductory trailers and accompanying enrichment resources. As planned, we have also launched our shop, featuring 29 Pieces' original art on clothing and a variety of accessories: https://amakw29shop.myshopify.com/ Region 10 Education Service Center Trainings In June 2020, 29 Pieces formed a partnership with Region 10 ESC to offer teacher trainings in Artists Making a Kinder World curriculum. Region 10 serves as host and promotion partner for monthly online trainings led by Karen Blessen, focusing on one lesson per month. (For example, in the past four months has hosted our teacher trainings in THRIVE (February 2021), FORGIVENESS (March 2021), HOPE (April 2021), and IMAGINE (May 2021) lessons ). Following training, teachers are equipped to facilitate lessons in their own classrooms. Teachers receive professional development credits for attending. Marketing 29 Pieces began daily social media promotion of Artists Making a Kinder World curriculum, featuring the content and applications of one lesson per month (coordinated with the training offered through Region 10). Daily promotion of Artists Making a Kinder World is conducted on Facebook (on the 29 Pieces page and via a dedicated private group), Instagram and Twitter. Cool Schools THRIVE Lesson One of 29 Pieces' primary focuses in 2020 was the design, production, and installation of art for six public parks located on six Dallas ISD elementary school campuses - a project in partnership with the Trust for Public Land as part of their mission to make greenspace available to all Dallas citizens within a 10 minute walk. This opportunity availed 29 Pieces the opportunity to engage teachers, students and administrators at each of the campuses in our THRIVE lesson, a lesson inviting the imagination of a "garden of peace." Students' art offered a template of motifs that professional artists drew upon in designing a large custom mural for each school. Participating Dallas ISD Elementary schools included: Frank Guzick and John Ireland (Southeast); Arturo Salazar (South); Sam Houston (Central); Reinhardt (Northeast); David G. Burnet (Northwest). Amidst the distancing required of us during a pandemic, we were pleased to have the opportunity to work with individual schools in conducting the THRIVE lesson - and to involve so many students in using their imagination to explore the natural world! 2020-2021 COOL SCHOOLS PROJECT: 5 of 6 Sites JOHN IRELAND ELEMENTARY, DALLAS ISD: 8 ft x 24 ft. mural art by students and artist Billy Hassell. DAVID G. BURNET ELEMENTARY, DALLAS ISD: 8 ft x 32 ft. mural art by students and artist Alejandra Camargo. ARTURO SALAZAR ELEMENTARY, DALLAS ISD: 40 ft x 18 ft. mural art by students and artist Jorge Gutierrez. FRANK GUZICK ELEMENTARY, DALLAS ISD: 8 ft x 32 ft. mural art by students and artist Abi Salami. REINHARDT ELEMENTARY, DALLAS ISD: 12 ft x 32 ft. and 12 ft.x 24 ft. mural art by students and artist Ray Mel Cornelius. NAEA Presentation Lastly, (but definitely not least!), 29 Pieces was included among presenters at the National Art Educators Association (NAEA) annual meeting in March 2021. Karen Blessen and Grand Prairie Visual Arts Coordinator, Judy Stone- Nunneley, presented the 29 Pieces LOVE lesson to a national audience of art educators with the invitation to join in a national LOVE project. The presentation served as the kick-off for The American LOVE Project, inviting schools and individuals from across the nation to create LOVE art in response to the Capitol insurrection in Washington DC on January 6, 2021. All student art will be featured in an online gallery and in physical installations - locally and in Washington DC in 2022. Challenges Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic created many challenges for 29 Pieces in 2020. The virus and stay-at-home orders beginning in March 2020 caused a temporary stoppage in our programming and necessitated changes in staff workflows and service delivery. In particular, we had to redesign teacher trainings through Region 10 as well as lesson facilitation at six Dallas elementary schools participating in the Cool Schools project for online environments. This included additional work to significantly rethink programming sequences and interactions, create instructional videos, and communicate changes to our partners and participants. Additionally, we shelved plans for 29 Pieces "15 Year Anniversary" celebration to honor our work from 2005-2020. This ongoing celebration would also have served us in a public relations and fundraising capacity - generating awareness and thanking/stewarding relationships with donors. These challenges slowed our work and had financial impacts in the forms of: (1) fulfilling obligations to pay for design and strategy work done on projects that had to be shelved or abandoned, (2) requiring significant work and time to redesign services for an online environment, and (3) disrupting workflows affecting not just 29 Pieces but our partners with whom we had contracted for these projects. Despite the significant challenges and tolls imposed by the crisis of the pandemic we all weathered together, 29 Pieces is very grateful to continue into 2021 with an exciting programming direction, solid partnerships, and a strong financial footing going into our final year of the Legacy Initiative - taking it national with The American LOVE Project!</Desc>
