This included the cancellation of our annual RevitalizeWA Conference scheduled to be held in Wenatchee in April and Youth Heritage Project planned for Port Townsend in July. Despite these cancellations, we were successful in taking a number of events virtual, including our Pints for Preservation happy hours, a new career panel series, Barn Week, and our annual Vintage Washington and Holiday Benefit fundraisers. Despite the new format of these events, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to bring the preservation community together and bring our message and programming to a statewide audience. We also explored new ways to connect with our members and the wider community online, with increased social media presence, video content, and online articles. We launched campaigns such as #hopespringshistoric, which featured messages of hope on historic buildings in the height of the shutdown, as well as community-driven recognition programs such as Resilience on Main and our a nomination program for local Third Places in anticipation of a new capital grant program to be offered in 2021.On the advocacy front, we entered 2020 with a busy schedule, both in Olympia and Washington, DC. In fact, our delegation to the annual Preservation Advocacy Week in DC in March was among the last to meet with our Senators and Representatives in person before the pandemic ultimately shut down the Senate and House offices. Key agenda items were funding for our SHPOs and THPOs as well as a number of important grant programs and improvements to the federal historic tax credit. In August, the Great American Outdoors Act was signed into law. In addition to permanently and fully funding the Land & Water Conservation Fund at $900 million a year, it also provided nearly $10 billion in funding over the next five years to address deferred maintenance issues in our National Parks and other public lands.For the last decade, the Trust has been proud to manage the Washington State Main Street Program in partnership with the States Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation. We already knew that Main Street is a vital driver of jobs, tourism, and preservation, but 2020 showed us just how essential Main Street is to our economies and our lives. The Washington Main Street network of 65 towns across the state stepped up tremendously to keep small businesses open, efficiently distribute critical information and funding, and showcase hope and resiliency during these uncertain times. Our confidence that Main Street is a powerful economic development strategy was also confirmed with the release of the Washington Main Street Impact Study. This report which details the economic, fiscal, and social impacts from 2011-2019 told us that Main Streets reach in Washington is significant and that the programs benefit to the state is extremely positive with a 58% return on investment. Although the pandemic forced us to cancel the annual RevitalizeWA Conference, we brought the Excellence on Main Awards online, which enabled us to highlight the many, many bright spots in our state in a difficult year for our Main Street communitiesDespite the challenges of 2020, our community remained vigilant in saving the places that matter in our state. In addition to the ongoing work on our 28 active Most Endangered Places campaigns around the state, such as the former Weyerhaeuser Campus in Federal Way and the LaCrosse Rock Houses, we had some saves to celebrate as well. These included the St. Nicholas Church in Gig Harbor and the Valley Schoolhouse in Stevens County. In 2020, we announced three new additions to the Most Endangered list and continue to work towards a successful conclusion for all active campaigns.In 2020, we also dove headfirst into the planning of the Maritime Washington National Heritage Area. In 2019, Congress officially designated the heritage area as a nationally significant landscape, and the Washington Trust was honored to be named as the coordinating entity. We believe this designation will help to boost tourism, support maritime industries, and provide a platform for the diverse stories along the coastline by building partnerships and facilitating collaboration. We launched the process to create a management plana roadmapfor the heritage area. Guided by a new Steering Committee and local partners, we developed a strategy to work with coastal communities to turn our collective vision into a plan for the heritage area over the course of 2021.2020 also saw the shuttering of our landmark headquarters, the Stimson-Green Mansion, and the cancellation of the special events that bring so much life to this historic building. However, we did not remain idle and completed a number of significant interior and exterior projects.
