These numbers were considerably below normal due to the COVID pandemic.Programs: The organization offered the program in 107 sites - 48 sites in the Fall and 59 sites in the Spring. Recruitment was limited due to the pandemic. Girls were served in the following counties: Alameda County & Contra Costa Counties 43%, 16% in Marin, 16% in SF County and 25% in San Mateo County.Financial Aid: 57% of the girls received financial assistance to participate in Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 programs this amounted to 632 girls receiving scholarships. New running shoes were donated to girls who did not have a good pair of sneakers.Community Support: 440 coaches volunteered during the two seasons. We also received assistance from 25 associate board members and 17 executive board members who were able to attend the site-specific 5K races. We were unable to do the huge 5K events due to pandemic gathering restrictions. However, we did have very successful 5Ks at every site with families joining in to run with their girls. Completion of the Program: With small team sizes (a ratio of 3.5 adult coaches per team), the GOTRBA program has a high completion rate. 87% attendance was achieved in fall 2020 and spring 2021, and 96% of girls attended the Girls on the Run 5K in at their site specific locations with their team. GOTR also encourages our alumnae network to participate both as junior coaches and mentors to our girls. Many of our junior coaches are former GOTRBA alumnae. Ive had so much fun this season and I really believe in the mission of Girls on the Run. I wish I had known about it when I was younger. Thank you for thinking of me and giving me the potential to do something like this - Junior Coach, KiraGirls on the Run was a bright spot for so many girls during the pandemic. We were able to continue to conduct our program safely outside, with smaller team sizes. Every girl and coach wore masks and were equipped with hand sanitizers, their own journals and markers and cinch sacs. Program Accomplishments FY21For the Fall, 100% of the girls participating in the Girls on the Run 5K reached their goal of finishing the run. Many of the girls ran it as a race, and others enjoyed the event as a celebration and culmination of all their learning from the 20 sessions in the program. The goal is to engage girls in exercise early, making it fun, not competitive or intimidating. Girls on the Run program conducts pre and post season surveys every season with coaches, parents and girls. The feedback continues to be very positive. In the Fall Survey 20, 95% of parent/guardians said they would describe their girl as confident after the Fall season (up from 84% pre-season). 94% of coaches agreed that the girls on their team are more confident because of participating in Girls on the Run. The surveys show increases in girls self-esteem, sports confidence, and community involvement. 88% of girls agreed with the statement I feel happy with myself as a person and 93% agreed or strongly agreed that Exercise is now a priority for my family. According to our parent pre-season survey (March 2021), 58% of parents said their daughters had been feeling lonely due to social distancing. After the program, we received an outpouring of thanks, demonstrating that our program plays an important role in nurturing the mind, spirit and body of our girls, at a time when stress levels are high, friendships are distant, and exercise options are few.Overall, the post-season parent surveys confirmed that Girls on the Run helped their daughters form healthy habits such as healthy friendships and a healthy attitude about themselves. We continue to measure on multiple KPIs that include the following: Increase in Girls' Attitudes toward Regular Exercise and Improved Physical Endurance in the Program, by Demonstrating that Physical Activity is Fun, including: Increased physical activity and attitude toward exercise; and participation and completion of the 5K.Increase in Self-Esteem, Confidence, and Impact of Healthy Decision Making, including: Positive attitude toward body image; building positive relationships with teammates and goal setting as a result of GOTRBA.Increase in Awareness about the Needs in their Community and Getting Involved to be a positive Part of the Solution, including: participation in a Community Impact Project.Increase in Understanding of Relationship between Exercise and Nutrition, including: Family engagement in the 5K, participation in decision making of healthy eating and exercise is a priority for the family.Girls on the Run has a positive impact not only on the girls but also our coach volunteers and principals:Still smiling ear to ear from the 5K!
