The Arizona Department of Education reported enrollment of McKinney-Vento* youth decreased by approximately 35%.During the 2020-21 school year, HYC served 322 students, a lower number than previous years due to the pandemic. HYC served 58 freshmen, 49 sophomores, 49 juniors, 100 seniors, and 15 college students, as well as 51 alumni who participated in aftercare services. In May 2021, there were 73 seniors actively participating in the program. Of those, 56 graduated, and nine will be attending summer school or another year of high school to make up classes. HYC helped 90% of seniors stay in school and complete their education. HYC's Host Family program remained flexible to meet the changing needs of unaccompanied youth during the pandemic, providing safe and stable housing to 24 unaccompanied youth. This past year, HYC was able to expand its reach to serve more schools in Maricopa County. We are excited to report that HYC partnered with the Glendale Union High School District, Scottsdale Unified School District and Tempe Union High School District to serve youth experiencing homelessness in those high schools.
