An Authenticity in the Classroom intensive training in partnership with NYC Department of Education After School Professional Development Program (ASPDP); 2. Ongoing monthly meetings with the entire faculty of the School of the Blessed Sacrament, as part of a year-long engagement to create a school-wide culture of authenticity-based social-emotional learning; 3. Four workshops on self-care for educators and authenticity-based SEL during the New York Archdiocese all-faculty training day. In response to the deepening crisis of COVID-19, in March 2020, we began to consider how to serve our community through distance learning. It was clear that there was a tremendous need for community and emotional support for educators struggling to cope with the situation and to help their students. In response, we launched our online Self-Care for Educators meetings in April as free monthly workshops. Due to demand, we increased the frequency of the workshops to weekly in early August. In 2020, over 125 educators participated, many of them attending regularly. "Authenticity in the Classroom" offered another early opportunity to experiment with the transition to a distance-learning model. We had an intensive two-day training scheduled in partnership with ASPDP for late April. In consultation with staff at ASPDP, we redesigned the training to work online as a four-day workshop to allow for the demands of learning remotely. We held the workshop on four consecutive weekend days in late April and early May. The participants were unanimous in their appreciation, emphasizing how intimate, positive, and productive the workshop was. Encouraged by the success of this workshop, we dedicated ourselves to designing programming for the online environment. We also saw an opportunity to emphasize the importance of culturally-responsive practice and critical consciousness in SEL. Our authenticity-based approach provides a unique foundation for bringing these ideas into teaching practice. We assembled a team of educators to help us further refine the online version of Authenticity in the Classroom and to design new modules of the program. The first new module we added was Authentic Advisories, which brings authenticity-based SEL to middle- and high-school students in advisories. In 2020, 32 educators, who collectively taught over 1,600 students in grades K-12, participated in nearly 500 program hours of Authenticity in the Classroom courses. In total in 2020, nearly 150 educators, who collectively taught approximately 7,500 students participated in the Guild's programming. 33563 0 32669 Boys' Arts Express/Girls' Arts Express: At the start of 2020, we continued to operate the Boys' Arts Express and Girls' Arts Express as parallel comprehensive five-days-a-week after-school programs at our hub at the Earth School in Lower Manhattan, New York. As the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in New York City, schools were closed on March 16th. The first order of business for the Guild was to address the immediate impact of suspending our Boys' Arts Express and Girls' Arts Express after school programs. As we absorbed the depth of the crisis we were facing and began to understand that the shutdown might last through the end of the school year, we quickly turned to planning how to serve our community through distance-learning models. By mid-April, we had designed an online offering for children who had attended our after school programs. From April 16th through June 26th, we held three Zoom classes every week, engaging children in creative activities designed to encourage them to express how they were feeling about learning from home, about the pandemic, and about anything else that was on their minds. While only fifteen children attended regularly, the sessions were engaging and productive. Out of this experience of working with children remotely came the idea for a virtual exhibition of children's art entitled The Spring We Stayed In. The show invited children to submit art and writing about their experiences of the pandemic. We continued to build on the ideas of how to engage children in harnessing creativity to explore their inner worlds while learning remotely. In October, we launched a new program, "My Creative Quest," that offers students in grades K-12 opportunities to pursue their interests while building creative skills.
