Civic engagement is the heart of our work toward a clean energy economy. NRCM's leadership most recently resulted in a landmark climate policy requiring Maine to reduce its carbon emissions 80% by 2050 and establish the first Climate Action Plan in 15 years as a path to achieve that goal. 423146 0 0 Communications: NRCM communicates with our members, supporters, policy makers, and the public using email updates and calls to action, community meetings and events, single-issue reports, direct mail, radio, videos, social media, and our website. The wide range of tools we regularly use advances our mission and helps to meet the goals of our programs and advocacy campaigns. 295697 0 0 State House/Emerging Issues: NRCM is Maine's top environmental watchdog. Performing within the allowable lobbying limits for a 501(c)(3), NRCM monitors issues related to each of our programs as well as emerging environmental issues that could impact Maine's air, forests, waters, wildlife, or community health. We also represent environmental interests at the Maine Legislature and before state agencies responsible for managing Maine's natural resources. 1051573 0 0 Sustainable Maine: NRCM has provided leadership that resulted in eight statewide programs to safely recycle consumer products that pose a risk to public health and the environment, including programs for beverage containers (the "bottle bill"), computers and TVs ("e-waste"), and unwanted paint. In July 2021, after more than two years of hard work, NRCM secured Maine's landmark Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Packaging recycling policy that will hold large corporate brands accountable for the plastic waste and packaging they create. The law will reform a broken system for managing household waste, spark innovation to make packaging easier to recycle, and alleviate the burden on taxpayers for managing the many different materials flowing into Maine. Successful EPR programs operate in 40 jurisdictions worldwide, including in the European Union and Canada. Maine is the first U.S. state to adopt the policy. Healthy Waters: Maine's rivers, lakes, and streams are the lifeblood of our state. Our waterways provide food for fish, birds, and wildlife, drinking water for communities, and they support fishing, paddling, and other recreation businesses. NRCM seeks to decrease water pollution and restore free-flowing rivers and native fish passage. NRCM is engaged in an internationally significant campaign to remove four obsolete, habitat-harming hydro-electric dams in the Kennebec River. After more than 100 years of being blocked from historic spawning and rearing habitat, removal of the dams would provide Atlantic salmon and 10 other species of sea-run fish direct access from the Gulf of Maine to 30 miles of habitat in the Kennebec and 70 miles in the Sandy River. Without removal of the dams, Atlantic salmon are likely doomed to extinction in the U.S. Outreach: NRCM's grassroots outreach initiatives engage residents ages 15-40s around issues important to Maine's next generation of environmental advocates, including clean water, climate action, public lands, and networking with peers to build Maine's environmental movement. Washington Watch/Federal Policy: NRCM mobilizes businesses and the public to urge Maine's Congressional leaders to stand up for the health and well-being of Maine people and the environment. Using our strong relationships with Maine's Congressional leaders, we work to influence federal administrative and Congressional actions that strengthen our economy, create new jobs, and protect our health by reducing carbon pollution, conserving outdoor spaces, investing in renewable energy and weatherization, and advancing cleaner, healthier transportation options. Forests & Wildlife: Maine is home to the largest intact temperate forest in the world, supporting unparalleled habitat for many rare plants and animals. Maine forests also offer unique recreation options and provide jobs in the forest products and tourism industries. NRCM supports responsible land development and sustainable forest practices that protect sensitive ecosystems and wildlife. These changes provide for chair to serve for two years rather than one. The current six-year limit on serving as an officer is omitted but the four-year limit on holding any one office is retained. Currently, the Board President "appoints" all committee members and chairs. The proposed changes formalize the process by having the President recommend, and the full Board approve, committee members and chairs. The completed 990 is sent to all board members for review and comments prior to the final copy submission to the IRS. The organization will monitor the compliance with an annual disclosure statement that is distributed to these individuals. For any conflict of interest, the person involved in the conflict shall take action in consultation with chief executive officer or president of the board to avoid participation in the matter to effectively avoid the conflict. The president and/or chief executive officer will monitor ongoing transactions or other matters affecting the organization for the conflicts of interest and disclosure those conflicts immediately to the executive committee or board as appropriate. These comparisons are used to gauge ranges and salaries for staff. The executive director's salary is reviewed and approved by the executive committee of the board of directors. All other staff salary adjustments are recommended by the management team and approved by the finance committee as part of the budgeting process.
