Our goal is to provide a safe, welcoming space where children expand their creative horizons and grow in confidence, character, and a strong sense of connection to their peers. We believe that every child deserves access to high quality arts education, and we actively seek to expand our outreach to underserved populations in our community. We offer financial assistance in the form of tuition reductions and waivers for students who would not otherwise be able to participate. 0 1 151399 32281 176049 BAAY Theatre: We provide children with a safe and nurturing community in which to study vocal and instrumental music, acting, costuming, theater tech, visual arts, and contemporary dance. In addition to artistic skills we are committed to fostering respect, cooperation, decision-making, self-discipline and self-confidence in young people. This year 277 unique students registered for at least one of 29 different programs, logging over 1100 hours total class and rehearsal time. 54 students received full or partial scholarship support. We staged 6 licensed shows, including Beauty and the Beast, Honk, and The Hobbit, as well as unique adaptations of classic fairy tales and "Something in the Stars," an original full-length musical that was entirely student written. We also partnered with a local dance company to produce The Nutcracker at the Mt. Baker Theater. An estimated 4300 children and adults attended 57 performances in our space prior to March 2020; an additional 200-300 tuned into live-stream performances and video premiers that we offered in the wake of the COVID closure. 44938 3780 51963 BAAY Preschool offers a unique early learning opportunity for children ages 2.5-5 years. Our arts-enriched curriculum incorporates fundamental principles of music, movement, and visual art instruction to help children develop cognitive, emotional, social and multi-sensory skills in a warm, nurturing environment. Additionally, our Kindergarten Readiness program helps to ensure our older students will have a smooth and successful transition to a traditional kindergarten setting. This year we were able to serve 28 individual children, 6 of whom received full or partial scholarships. Unfortunately our school year was cut short by the COVID shut down. The preschool has been shuttered since March 2020; it remains to be seen what the future holds for this program service area. 28633 4197 27308 BAAY's EduArts program carries the philosophy and instructional approach of our flagship Theatre program into local public and private schools, providing affordable after-school enrichment classes in a variety of performing and visual arts. EduArts instructors work with school officials and PTA's to tailor their classes to the needs of each particular school group. Anecdotal reports suggest that for many students, EduArts is their first experience with any sort of formal arts instruction. In addition to expanding educational opportunities, these classes also help to allay concerns about after-school child care for working families. With this in mind, we are actively seeking to expand our reach into underserved schools in our community, particularly Title I schools. This year, before the COVID shut-down in March 2020, we were able to offer 35 programs in 12 different schools, with a total of 329 students participating. It is one of BAAY's hallmarks that we have never turned any child away for financial reasons. We offer scholarships in the form of tuition reductions or waivers to students with demonstrated need; families can submit a Financial Assistance application along with their child's regular class registration. We evaluate the applications on a case by case basis and award scholarships accordingly. Both individual scholarship recipients and donations to the Scholarship Fund are tracked internally. Scholarship awards range from 25%-100% of the tuition cost of any given program. Form 990, Part III, Line 3 For the first half of the fiscal year our program offerings were comparable to previous years, but COVID restrictions forced us to cancel all in-person classes, rehearsals and performances beginning in March 2020. With the exception of our Preschool, we were able to adapt our approach and offer a variety of on-line classes, some of which were versions of our traditional classes and some of which were entirely new. The Preschool remains closed for now, but the online classes for elementary and secondary aged students have been very well received. Not only have we been able to continue offering programming for students ages 5-18, but we have identified new instructional opportunities that we can integrate into our traditional curriculum once we are able to resume normal operations.
