The Company typically gives over 100 performances each year at the Citizens Bank Opera House in Boston, MA. This year's programs and financial results were significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Boston Ballet's season programs scheduled for performance March 12, 2020 onwards were cancelled or postponed following stay-at-home orders and gathering restrictions imposed by city and state governments. A multi-pronged management effort was immediately launched to stem revenue loss, mitigate expenses, and secure significant, advance philanthropic and federal aid to prepare the Company for ongoing theater closure. BBS provides dance education and training to nearly 4,000 students through several programs. The Classical Ballet Program follows a carefully designed curriculum with nine levels of study. Virginia Williams Fund ("The Fund") held in trust and managed by The Boston Foundation. The Fund was established in the early 1980's for the exclusive benefit of the Ballet on the condition the Ballet continues to operate as a 501(c)(3) ballet company. The fund had a fair market value of $1,985,446.42 at June 30, 2020. Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 The Ballet's Endowment consists of over twenty individual funds established to support artistic productions, scholarships to the Boston Ballet School, and community programmatic activities. Schedule D, Part X, Line 1 The Ballet is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (the "Code") and is generally exempt from federal and state income taxes on related income. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is made in the financial statements. The Ballet accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The Ballet has identified its tax status as a tax-exempt entity as a tax position; however, the Ballet has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The Ballet is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Its federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination for three years after the date of filing the related return. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The Ballet has an employment agreement with its Artistic Director and its Executive Director effective through June 30, 2024, and June 30, 2021, respectively. Terms of the employment agreements include annual compensation amounts and are reviewed and approved by the Executive Committee. The Ballet analyzes comparable compensation data when determining annual compensation for the Artistic Director and Executive Director.
