Both programs provide grant funds through a challenge costs share with the US Forest Service. Organizations must apply through a competition, they go through a rigorous review process, and selected projects then submit periodic invoices for reimbursement of qualified expenses. Invoices are reviewed for appropriateness. A final report is due at the end of each calendar year describing accomplishments and final expenditures. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6 Membership in NWSA occurs either as an Organization or as an Individual Member. Membership entitles one to discounts to the National Wilderness Workshop, a subscription to the International Journal of Wilderness, and access to webinars and newsletters. Organization membership allows groups to compete for available Wilderness Stewardship Performance funding.
