Its historic 900-seat theater, built in 1878, is the oldest in New Hampshire. The other is the Loft, a modern 124-seat theater across the street. The Music Hall presents diverse and relevant programming, including its signature series such as Writers on a New England Stage, Hilarity and Intimately Yours. The theater also hosts community fundraisers and celebrations for the benefit of more than 60 local nonprofits. The selection process included a review of estimates and qualifications by The Music Hall's Facilities committee which made the recommendation to the full board to select Auger Building Co based on the contractor's familiarity in working with historic structures, relationship with The Music Hall's HVAC vendor and competitive pricing. Form 990, Part III, Line 1 Continuation The pandemic caused many of The Music Hall's community engagement and outreach initiatives to be temporarily suspended. The board, staff, and volunteers look forward to the end of the pandemic to resume our education and outreach programs. These include low-cost or free ticketed performances of top-quality live children's theater and a student scholarship program, which provides bus transportation and bagged lunches to local Title I schools to expose young people to live theater. The pandemic's end also will allow The Music Hall to bring back high school and college students from the area to our master classes, films, and literary events, and as interns. The Music Hall hosts community forums with expert panels on important issues, through its thought-provoking Innovation + Leadership series. Each summer, The Music Hall hosts a Fill The Hall event with Gather, the Seacoast's food pantry, where community members donate bags of non-perishable food to place on every seat in the Historic Theater. During the onset of the pandemic in June 2020, more than 13 tons of food and more than $75,000 in cash donations were collected for Gather's Summer Meals 4 Kids program. This was especially needed in this pandemic year. Much of The Music Hall's success and rich programming, both before and during COVID, can be attributed to partnerships with New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR), the University of New Hampshire, and its strong support from City of Portsmouth officials and residents. The Music Hall continues to partner with the Ogunquit Playhouse to offer top-notch, world class Broadway theatrical holiday performances. We all look forward to the time Broadway shows can safely return to the historic stage. The Historic Theater, recognized as an American Treasure by the U.S. Senate, has been beautifully restored and thoughtfully expanded, winning numerous design awards. Our theater is a point of pride in New England. It is carefully looked after with a mix of professional staff and volunteer board members with superior facility and building skills. Due to the many needs of the Historic Theater, a capital campaign is actively ongoing. As part of The Music Hall's most current strategic plan, fundraising and construction planning efforts commenced in 2019 to address critical infrastructure improvements for the Historic Theater's HVAC system, backstage artist green room space, and an upgraded theatrical lighting system. To keep our programming going during COVID19, we created two new show series -Live Under the Arch and Stage Door Cabaret- to provide well-ventilated spaces and smaller audience sizes, featuring local and regional artists. We fast tracked our plans for a new HVAC system to allow us to return people to the theater with proper social distancing. Measures were taken to ensure the safety of staff, volunteers and patrons. The Music Hall, like all arts venues, had to cancel or reschedule many shows starting in April of 2020 and continuing through 2021. This meant our income was markedly reduced. Necessary cost-cutting measures were taken, including laying off both full and part-time professionals. Pre-pandemic, The Music Hall was on track for one of its strongest spring seasons. Our board and staff adapted quickly and creatively to maintain our core values and mission. Our goal: Keep the theater's doors open to artists and audiences while operating under the State of New Hampshire safety guidelines. We provided virtual programming for literary, film and music events. The theater also revitalized community partnerships by increasing its support for local artists and other nonprofit arts and cultural organizations. Our successes were possible due to The Music Hall's unified effort with other New Hampshire based nonprofit arts and entertainment organizations to get COVID disaster relief funding. Also, we enjoyed incredible generosity and steadfast support from major donors and corporate sponsors. Lastly, after 16 years at the helm as The Music Hall's Executive Director, Patricia Lynch announced her retirement in July 2019. A search committee comprised of current and former board members was selected. The committee hired a national search firm specializing in executive leadership for arts organizations. After reviewing more than 100 applications and hosting a dozen interviews, Tina Sawtelle was chosen as the organization's new Executive Director on July 1, 2020, after serving as The Music Hall's CFO for five years. A copy of the final 990 is submitted to the board of directors for review before its filing.
