Annual financial statements are posted on a federal website. Due to the Novel Coronavirus-19 natural disaster, the organization was shut down due to state mandates. The organization is not equipped to operate in a virtual environment. Upon reopening, several key staff either tested positive for COVID-19 or had to quarantine due to exposure to COVID-19. In addition to COVID-19 issues, the organization faced additional shut downs due to unusual inclement weather. These shut downs and absences caused financial statements to be delayed. The Office of Management and Budget OMB extended the due date for single audits to be submitted to the Federal Audit Clearinghouse by six months as a result of challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic. The OMB announced the extension in memorandum M 20-26. The audit was performed remotely and the situation with staffing, inclement weather, pandemic related challenges, and other variables caused audited financial statements to be delayed. This organization provides services to low-income, underprivileged individuals to help alleviate poverty in the communities it serves. It would impose an undue hardship on the organization to be required to pay a penalty for late filing due to the COVID-19 natural disaster. It would also cause monies to be used that would have been more effective if they were utilized to help individuals in need during these difficult times. We respectfully request that a penalty NOT be imposed for the late filing of this tax return. We thank you in advance.
