Adapting as best as it could, in March, 2020, SoHarlems core staff of 9 produced and started supplying New York City hospitals (Harlem, Brooklyn & Mount Sinai) with over 300 gowns and 2,000 medical masks. We produced an additional 750 reusable masks for organizations who cannot afford them for their constituents, which also enabled us to sustain a workforce of seven for an additional month. Also in March, one of our creative entrepreneurs offered an online fabric sourcing workshop to 24 participants and our designers-in-residence provided 50 free coaching sessions. In the Spring we started a decontamination process in order to keep workspaces sanitized and employees safe. 26302 58382 5750 Since SoHarlems inception, it has piloted programs and exploratory initiatives to address community needs, incorporating learned methodology to develop training programs. To date, 57 creatives have participated, 20 have gone on to establish their own enterprises, and 24 formerly incarcerated women have been trained to repurpose textiles, and to restore decorative items for sale. During the past two years, SoHarlem trained 40 of its neighbors in garment construction, and from that pool, eight were selected to become apprentices at the Studio to further develop their skills. Most recently, two of them were hired at SoHarlem, one focused on pattern making and digital embroidery and the other on refurbishing hand made, historically significant quilts which require strong hand stitching and other skills. Through its summer youth training programs, SoHarlem has served more than 30 members of the local community, and conducted 20 public programs. Through SoHarlem's Public/Private Partnership Initiative we work with other entities to make the District's public commons welcoming and inspiring through murals and public art installations. To date, we have completed a circular mosaic glass mural at the entrance to the Mink Building.
