<Desc>1. DrugsData Lab Drug Checking -- Erowid Center runs a laboratory drug checking program that analyzes the contents of samples of psychoactive drugs, including: novel psychoactive substances (NPS); euphoric stimulant tablets and powders (including MDMA/ecstasy/molly); psychedelics, research chemicals; street heroin, fentanyl and other opioids; as well as commercial and counterfeit pharmaceuticals. Samples are tested at a DEA-licensed laboratory and the results are published online at DrugsData.org. Erowid's DrugsData project also collects, manages, reviews, and presents laboratory-testing results from other US and international organizations. This information is made publicly available to help harm-reduction efforts, medical personnel, researchers, and the public. In 2021, there were 1,738 samples tested through the project, nearly double the previous year. These results were published along with those for an additional 638 samples tested by other organizations. An average of 16,000 results were viewed per day, with an average 8,000 unique visitors per day. Results were also regularly published on social media systems with Erowid's more than 100,000 followers. In 2021, Erowid increased its partnerships with research groups doing lab validation of on-site analytical tools such as compact FTIR and fentanyl test strips. [see Schedule O]</Desc>

<Desc>2. Public Online Information Services -- Erowid Center develops, maintains, and provides free access to an online collection of more than 94,000 documents, images, and other media files related to psychoactive plants and drugs. The collection contains information, essays and articles authored by a broad spectrum of contributors including health care professionals, substance abuse counselors, toxicologists, chemists, therapists, law enforcement agents, lawyers, anthropologists, experiential experts, writers, media, educators, and the general public. Note that Erowid's Experience Reports project is tracked as a separate program service.</Desc>

<Desc>3. Archiving of Historical Documents -- Erowid Center's mission includes collecting, organizing, and preserving resources about psychoactives for the historical record. In 2021, Erowid's primary document archiving project was to continue digitizing Alexander and Ann Shulgin's personal papers, photographs, recordings, documents, and books as well as beginning the process of organizing, identifying, and creating metadata for the digitized files. We accepted smaller physical collections of personal papers from anonymous experts in related fields to be organized, indexed, preserved, and eventually made publicly available. Erowid Center continues to maintain and upgrade a physical space designed to allow processing of historical archive collections (organizing, scanning, photographing, and digitizing) as well as permanent storage of such library archives/collections.</Desc>

We also worked on multiple scientific/medical research projects as part of the Lab Validation subproject of our DrugsData program. Erowid improves scientific, medical, and sociological information about psychoactive substances and those who use them by promoting participation in studies and surveys produced by academics, educational institutions, and related organizations. Erowid works directly with scientists-in areas where we have specialized knowledge-to help design credible studies and provide editing, reviewing, and fact-checking for resulting academic publications. <Desc>5. Drug Trend & Novel Psychoactive Substance Tracking -- Tracking new psychoactive medicines, technologies, research chemicals, and novel psychoactive substances (NPS) is one of Erowid Center's areas of expertise. With the objective of educating the public on the risks and benefits associated with emerging drugs, we 1) monitor the availability, use patterns, and effects of these substances through consultation with volunteers, allied organizations, medical professionals, submissions, and online forums; 2) analyze psychoactive chemicals through our DrugsData program (tracked as a separate project); 3) coordinate between experts and researchers in the field; 4) educate writers and authors for media, news, and books; and 5) publish information about these substances, online and in print. In 2021, Erowid's DrugsData encountered numerous unidentifiable novel substances in submitted samples. We worked with international experts to identify these substances and publish about their existence. We also partnered with multiple groups look into the shifting contents of street 'heroin'/down/dope/fentanyl as well as cocaine and methamphetamine. Erowid helped identify and characterize contaminants, synthesis byproducts, and novel substances.</Desc>

<Desc>6. Experience Reports Collection -- Erowid Center solicited, reviewed, and published first-hand reports of people's experiences with psychoactive plants, drugs, and technologies. This produced vital information about novel and classic psychoactive materials as well as aggregate data about why and how people use psychoactives, both for current factual documentation and for the historical record. Researchers, academics, medical professionals, and the public use the results for educational purposes and as data for peer-reviewed articles and publications. Reports are reviewed and edited before being published. Trained volunteers perform a portion of the work under the supervision of Erowid staff. In 2021, Erowid crew completed 6,650 "triages" (reading and rating an experience report), published 1,804, and ended the year with 40,636 published reports in the collection covering 861 substances. Approximately 20 million experience reports were viewed during the year. 7. Education</Desc>

The second was the annual event of the Association for Collaborative Drug Checking, whose members are involved in building, operating, or expanding on-site drug checking and harm reduction programs using on-site technologies. More than 10,000 copies of previous issues of Erowid Extracts were viewed/downloaded in 2021, and thousands of people read individual articles from previous issues online. <ExplanationTxt>Erowid Center has diverse volunteers, from senior researchers to policy makers, health care workers to professors, informed parents to harm-reduction workers, and college-age drug geeks. In 2021, Erowid Center had more than 1,756 volunteers on its volunteer email list, 274 people signed up as volunteer content reviewers, and 25 active Experience Report volunteers. Volunteers reviewed and edited content, found and summarized news stories relevant to our educational mission, tracked drug trends, entered drug checking results, worked to identify unknown substances, visited physical libraries to locate reference materials, helped with archiving projects, and triaged or reviewed Experience Reports. Erowid volunteers contributed more than 1,000 combined hours, though we do not ask volunteers to document their time.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Erowid Center's Conflict of Interest policy covers the officers and Board members of the organization and their families. Every transaction of the organization is reviewed and approved by the Treasurer. The Treasurer reviews any payment to any Board member or key employee for conflicts of interest. Any transactions that might entail a conflict of interest is reviewed by the Board of Directors (minus any interested member). For transactions that involve the Treasurer, such as salary or reimbursement of unusual expenses, approval is sought from an independent committee of the Board.
