Our exempt purpose is "to seek ot increase the level of social, racial, envrionmental justice in thre US and around the world by improving the effectiveness of the maneer in which people go about working together in struggles for a more just society." Given the importance of the greatest environmental justice threat of all, in 2021,we have continued to make grants to organizations working on the climate crisis. In this area, we made grants of $238,730 to organizations and paid consultants to organize peer support groups for dozens of environmental activists and peer-based educational forums and public events reaching 5,000 people. 20000 0 20000 Internship. In this climate justice area, in 2021, we added a BIPOC MOCO Green New Deal internship program here in Montgomery County (MOCO) which we operate ourselves, primarily with volunteers. We paid 40 interns $500 apiece. As with the program area 4a above, these interns are educated and trained in peer based support that they can then share with BIPOC communities around issues of concern as to their race and class-based disenfranchisement and its remedies, and as to environment justice including the existential threats posed by climate chaos. 475000 475000 475000 Social and racial justice. In the social and racial justice area, our focus has been on supporting those communities most impacted. In this region, this means the African-heritage community. During the pandemic, we first encountered Harriet's Wildest Dreams (HWD) doing peer-based mutual aid in the Black community and we provided financial support as an unpaid fiscal sponsor. In this reporting year, the broad progressive philanthropic community in the area rallied to the support of this Black-women and non-binary led organization. This has allowed us to greatly expand our support for HWD. Our grants have enabled HWD to launch broad peer-based, community-empowerment programs and grow from a team of three volunteers to a paid staff of five, including two full-time and three part-time, with sixteen stipended community fellows, dozens of volunteers with a goal 500 active members by 2023. Their DC Safety team alone trains and equips peer responders to react to acute and emergent crises throughout the city with compassionate care. On the issue of social justice for women alone, through a series of public events, HWD has built a rapid response network of 2,000. They organized peer-based community-listening projects and a policy forum. They now have programs working on anti-Blackness, with the LGBTQIA+ community, on gentrification, with metro riders, with returning citizens and watching courts. The latter program alone has 50 volunteers. Despite its size, none of the staff earns $100,000 from all related sources. Since we work with a narrow focus in the climate area and also in our geographical area, we typically know our grantees before we receive a proposal. Often we serve as a fiscal sponsor for our grantees. Most of our grants are repeats. When the proposal is accepted we execute a Memorandum Of Understanding with the grantee. The MOU requires each grantee to limit its activities to those allowed by 501 c 3 organizations and to keep written records of its expenditures. At the end of the proposal, we require a written report. Since we have few granteees, we maintain regular contact by phone, email and social media. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c We regularly and consistently monitor and enforce compliance with the policy. Our policy requires that the Board of Directors review the policy during at least one Board Meeting annually. We circulate the name of any organization we do business with greater than $10,000. Directors must submit annual disclosure statements as well as before election. A conflict must be disclosed immediately and referred to the Board. The Board investigates, determines if conflict exists at meeting with majority of Driectors present. If it does exist then alternatives must be considered. If the Board the conflict is fair and reasonable in the interest of the corporation, they can approve. Decision must include basis and be recorded in minutes along with alternatives considered. If we do, we will conduct review and approval by independent persons, gather comparability data, and contemporaneous substantiation of the deliberation and decision.
