The curriculum is fully integrated into the fifth-grade science objectives. We launched the first Island Explorer trips in the fall of 2013 with 50 students from Wrightsville Beach Elementary. Since then, the program has grown to over 4500 students from every eligible school in New Hanover county. As part of the ILX program, we plan to target 24 total schools and more than 2,000 students for the 2020-2021 school year. Of this, 18 schools and ~1,476 students are in Title I schools according to NCES data. This program provides hands-on learning inside and outside the classroom, aiming to build student interest in environmental sciences. Our goal is to provide this opportunity for all New Hanover County fifth-graders, regardless of financial capacity. Despite living on a coastal county, many of the students have never been to a barrier island, or even on a boat. Students experience the natural science by investigating the life and forces that make up a barrier island, salt marshes, and estuaries. We coordinate with the NC Department of Instruction, the NOAA and the North Carolina Coastal Reserve to create high quality educational programs.
