Its purpose is to benefit wildlife and wilderness preservation, charitable, religious, educational, literary, national or international sports competitions, prevention of cruelty to children or animals, and/or scientific endeavors. false false 64670 The Sand River corridor is one of the key wildlife corridors for elephants between the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Naimina Enkiyio - the Sacred Forest, and the Great Rift Valley near the Kenya-Tanzania border. A number of corridors are being identified in this area using geographic and elephant collar tracking data collected by our partners the Mara Elephant Project (MEP). The corridor has an altitude variance of 1000 feet, and it links areas with incredible biodiversity. It is part of what keeps the Mara, Rift Valley, Serengeti, and Amboseli Ecosystems connected. Keeping corridors like this one open is critical because it allows wildlife and communities to access different resources at different times of the year and maintain ecosystem health and resilience to changes in climate. The area has traditionally been communally owned rangelands belonging to semi-nomadic pastoralist Maasai communities, but recent government policy changes mean the landscape is being subdivided and shared out into small individual titles. Parts of this wilderness area have already been fenced and converted into patchworks of small farms, which restrict connectivity and increase human-wildlife conflict. We and our partners CWCT, MEP and the Forest Guardians are working in partnership with communities along the corridor to develop effective land use plans that benefit them and keep this corridor open for them and for wildlife. We have also started to invest in developing alternative sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities, such as beekeeping and grow bags, which help to reduce human-wildlife conflict along the corridor. In addition to this we are working to develop new partnerships with community organisations along the corridor. For example we have helped Osero Community Football League register its organisation, and we are helping it to develop its own sustainable revenue sources in order to empower the over 150 young people it represents, so that they can be partners in the Sand River Corridor Project. 26200 We sponsor students from rural Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia to achieve their dreams of finishing their schooling. So far the program has supported 53 students and many of them have become forces for positive change in their communities. For example, Francis Lemoile. He went to Kipsing Academy, the first school we helped to build in Samburu, and then was sponsored through tertiary education. He is now working for SAFE Samburu, helping educate his community about HIV/AIDS, female genital mutilation (FGM) abandonment and child's rights! They have recently been involved with a big breakthrough: on the 9th of March this year, the Samburu elders signed the Kisima declaration to abandon FGM in the Samburu community, which is fantastic news. What's more, Francis and his wife Monicah are also now supporting 14 girls from poor families in his community to attend school. In 2021 we took on 15 more students, so we are now currently supporting 29 students to stay in school. 11500 Tsutsubega is a rural area on the southern edge of the Okavango, just north of Maun, where now approximately 500 people live. Despite living near the Delta this community often don't have drinking water because they live on seasonal flood plains, and their most common issues are droughts and wildlife threats. The Tsutsubega Conservation Project, aims to uplift the Tsutsubega community, provide solutions to human-wildlife conflict and promote sustainable eco-tourism projects in this area, so that this community can benefit from the wildlife on their land. We are also working to develop new partnerships with community organizations. A local Kenyan organization: Tourism for Conservation put forward a detailed proposal to help ten football teams in the Sand River Corridor register a league and help it develop its own sustainable revenue sources so that it can be a partner organization in the Sand River Corridor Project. However, Peter Silvester, one of Royal African Foundation's directors, is a founder of Tourism for Conservation, so he declared a potential conflict of interest to the Board when the proposal was put forward to the Board. The proposal and grant were put up for the rest of the Board to discuss and vote on. All of the disinterested directors agreed that the transaction was in the Organization's best interest, for its own benefit, that Tourism for Conservation was the best organization on the ground to carry out the work, and that it was fair and reasonable. So the following grant to Tourism for Conservation was approved. $30,410 through the Sand River Corridor project. The Osero Community Football League has since been established and the Royal African Foundation plans to continue to help their organization develop, and to assist other similar leagues to develop their own organizations too, in order to empower the young people in this area, and make sure they are included in the Sand River Corridor Project.
