The festival takes place at the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture in the Marina district of San Francisco. The Festival is a many faceted operation featuring dozens of artists, numerous presenters, educators, and other partner organizations. 0 0 99885 8431 With the May 2020 Festival cancelled, SFIAF began to work with local artists who would have been part of the program to alert them to inform them about emergency funds. We also convened artists in online community meetings to find out their priorities for reopening the arts and working safely during the pandemic. Overwhelmingly artists said they wanted to perform outdoors in neighborhood serving venues. SFIAF began to work towards this goal. One of the first steps was to direct production staff to research outdoor venues suitable for multidisciplinary performances in each of the 11 districts represented on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. SFIAF approached the City in regards to making public lands available for live, distanced performances by local artists. SFIAF eventually decided on the Golden Gate National Recreation site at Fort Mason managed by the National Park Service. SFIAF identified 16 different sites suitable for performances on the 13-acre site and created maps and plans to demonstrate how the productions could be carried out safely. SFIAF was able to present single performances by 17 Bay Area based artists on October 24-25. Most of the concerts were also livestreamed.
