However, Orbis country teams were able to safely and successfully pivot their program approaches, while incorporating innovative approaches to reach communities and beneficiaries with eye care services around the world. By the end of 2021, Orbis was supporting 73 active global projects in 13 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbeans, and 25 of these were new - an impressive 67 increase in new work. Over the same period, a total of 51,846 trainings were completed for health care professionals and community health workers over 2 million eye screening and examinations conducted at community level and 1,588,651 patient visits for eye care services and 95,087 glasses were prescribed with Orbis providing free or subsidized eyeglasses for close to 29,000 beneficiaries. Additionally, 22,365 eye surgeries were performed in hospital operating theatres including an estimated 16,000 Trichiasis Trachomatous surgeries. Form 990, Part III, Section 1, Line 1 2. The Orbis Ethiopia team reached more than 12-million people in 102 trachoma endemic districts across three regional states with Zithromax through Mass Drug Administration MDA activities, including more than 5-million people reached through community-based MDA activities. In Bangladesh, Orbis adopted community-based and house-to-house screening, while in India alternative school-based screening was rolled out to enable achievement of performance targets. Orbis country programs continued to foster strong partnerships with host governments, regional and national stakeholders and improved local ownership and buy-in. In Ghana, our programs collaborated with other organizations on the Eye NGOs Forum, which increased advocacy and support for primary eye care work. Support for national eye health priorities in Vietnam was through continuous learning from health care practitioners and stakeholders. In Peru, our approach to partnership development emphasized the important role of local government in the design and implementation of eye health projectsthat meet community and national needs. Through the Orbis Chinas work, comprehensive child eye health network in Ningxia and the National Pediatric Eye Care Training Center in Shanghai, hybrid online and in person vision promotion events resulted in an estimated 8 million participants online and more than 62,000 participants in person. Retinopathy of prematurity screening and red reflex testing were scaled up in six provinces in Mongolia and these approaches are now incorporated in the national program on early identification of diseases. In Bangladesh, strong partnership with the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, resulted in over 36,000 children living with diabetes receiving various eye care services. In Vietnam collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, Tien Giang Eye Hospital, and the endocrinology departments at Nguyen Tri Phuong General Hospital enabled the Orbis Vietnam to establish a diabetic retinopathy DR screening training course and reached a total of 5,428 diabetic patients, and development of guidelines for DR screening and management is underway. The Zambia program strengthened eye care capacity at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka by providing hands-on training for resident doctors in ophthalmology, procured and installed eye diagnostic and treatment equipment, and supported a vitreo-retinal fellowship for one of the ophthalmologists at the teaching hospital. Resident training in Phacodynamics and Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography were convened in the second half of 2021 in Bolivia. Form 990, Part III, Section 1, Line 1 6. Orbis India developed an innovative curriculum for a sandwich fellowship on glaucoma which is now available on Cybersight. 502 ophthalmologists and 113 optometrists were trained through various capacity building initiatives such as observership at the hospital, taking up fundamental courses on glaucoma on Cybersight and through seven webinars and workshops on glaucoma and artificial intelligence, including two workshops on Artificial Intelligence driven interpretation of the retinal images. The Orbis Ghana program successfully integrated primary eye care into four district health care systems in the Ashanti region and incorporated service delivery performance indicators in performance appraisals for trained health workers. In Coxs Bazar, Orbis Bangladesh in collaboration with the United Nations and other development partners successfully integrated eye care into existing health services and reached 109,230 Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals and host community members with primary eye care services and provided 1,441 cataract surgeries. In China through utilization of Cybersight, and partnership with Shenyang He Eye Specialist Hospital HESH, an online glaucoma project was implemented that developed suitable training courses for ophthalmologists of different levels in accordance with international standards, recruited more Chinese ophthalmologists to enroll in Orbis fundamental courses, and provided qualified training to junior ophthalmologists to improve the eye care service capacity of lower-level hospitals. A virtual Flying Eye Hospital program was also rolled out that delivered 16 live webinars to the nearly 300 ophthalmologists.
