We are using the structure of a service-learning program that allows a combination of learning connected with social action that formed the basis for alternative break programs to make a smooth transition to a new structure for virtual volunteering.Community La Jicotea.In this community we had being working on the installation of a 5k gallon water tank that will be supplying water to 34 family homes. This community held a meeting with Servicio Para la Paz where it presented that one of its three priorities, the most important was access to drinking water in homes.Water harvesting FamiliesIn January 2021, SFP supported 4 additional families in the La Rosa community by providing access to drinking water in their homes, managing to finish supporting 20 families with the project, this completed the support cycle for families in La Rosa allowing SFP to focus on the completion of the 9.9-gallon water tank.Virtual Service Experience (VSE)Servicio Para la Paz Republica Dominicana (SPP-RD) developed its two first virtual programs with which we had impacted 26 participants, 10 from NC state and 16 from Appalachian State University, as well as two families form the community La Rosa who will be receiving a water harvest system in their houses. Both programs develop in the period from March-April 2021 and from their beginning to their conclusion we had a great receptivity from both universities' participants. SPP-RD has work with Appalachian State university for more than 8 years and with NC State for only two years, which make it really important for us how both our oldest and newest partners were interest not only on the program itself but also on keep supporting the work we do in the DR.Creation of EcopeaceGeneral ObjectiveIn the months of April to June, we continued the development and outreach of our Ecopeace programs that will stimulate financial income to DR communities through the ecotourism and generate income for the sustainability of SPP. The Ecopeace program will support communities where the ecotourism activities based on SFP's model of Community Driven Development through neighborhood councils, and community engagement.SFP has taken on the objective to empower the communities of La Jicotea and La Cienega Communities to be self-sustainable model communities based on the community-driven development model and focused on clean water and sanitation.By utilizing the community-driven development model, SFP will foster inclusion and integration within the community through the neighborhood councils. This will allow community members to participate in all aspects of the development process of their community. Community leaders and members will receive the tools and trainings that will allow them to develop creative solutions for their development challenges.In the area of Potable Water and Sanitation, the community of La Jicotea, through the family and community water harvesting project, will be addressing one of their priorities, which is access to drinking water. Families in La Jicotea will a 200-gallon tank to store rainwater in their homes as well as a 1000-gallon community tank so they can have it in reserve and distribute it in case of droughts.
