<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Investigative Reporting in the public interest - Open Vallejo published groundbreaking, original stories in 2021 that have generated major impact in Vallejo and in Solano County as a whole, earning our website approximately 10,174 unique views per month. Our work helped inform the passage of California Senate Bill, which authorizes Californias Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to revoke the peace officer powers of problem officers. It generated a civil grand jury investigation into potential bias in the Solano County Sheriffs Office. For the first time in the known history of the Vallejo Police Department, an officer was fired as a direct result of a fatal use of force. Our work is now a basis on which civil rights attorneys are seeking federal receivership of the department, and information we uncovered is playing a major role in local criminal cases. Vallejo police officers have quit or retired. And our work is referenced by the public in numerous city council meetings, public rallies, and other forums. Here are stories we published in 2021:a. Footage of Sean Monterrosas killing by police was overwritten. Here is what we know about that nightb. Vallejo police secretly tested dystopian facial recognition toolc. Solano deputies, Vacaville councilmember promote anti-government militiad. Amid calls for investigation, sheriff stands by deputies who displayed militia supporte. FBI rebuffs sheriffs claim it cleared deputies of extremist tiesf. Fired Vallejo employees sue, alleging retaliation and threatsg. Open Vallejo wins national journalism honor for exposing secret police ritualIn April of 2021 Open Vallejo partnered with the national nonprofit news organization ProPublica to produce a series of stories about Vallejo Police. That major investigation is now nearing fruition in 2022.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Public records requests and litigation -Open Vallejo filed numerous public records requests in 2021, which has contributed to the public understanding of local government. Last summer our small team analyzed and coded approximately 8,000 pages of records relating to police violence and misconduct. In September we filed a major public records lawsuit in Solano County Superior Court that resulted in the disclosure of more than 4,000 pages of records and more than four hours of audio and video relating to a controversial fatal shooting by Vallejo police. This has generated news reporting on the killing from this newsroom as well as others, and has informed the public both in Vallejo and across the country. This litigation has been made possible in part by a partnership with the Protecting Journalists Pro Bono Program, an initiative of the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine and Microsoft coordinated by the nonprofit Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Open Vallejo has been an early and active partner in this project.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
