<Desc>1) Direct Youth Service, Master of Social Work Intern ProgramOur Master of Social Work (MSW) Intern Program places interns with youth-serving partners and school districts across Los Angeles County. This last year we worked with the following partners to place interns to work directly with youth. Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District; Lincoln Middle School, John Adams Middle School, Santa Monica High School, Olympic High School & SMASH. In addition we placed interns at DaVinci Rise, part of DaVinci School,Yetunde Price Center, Hawaii Boys & Girls Clubs and Chucos Justice Center.MSW interns meet with individual and group clients 16-20 hours a week, 2-4 days a week from September through May. In addition to one on one services, MSW interns run groups on topics ranging from stress and anxiety, grief support, and special identified need groups such as: student of color support group, an 8th grade retention group and a girls group. They also provide informal check ins and crisis intervention for countless youth at our partner sites. The MSW Intern Program aims to provide quality intern training, focused on client-centered counseling services and crisis management. We use Solution Focused Therapy as our main intervention; it is client centered and empowers the client to develop their own solutions. In addition, we also focus our intern training on restorative justice. Students of color face a disproportionate number of disciplinary actions in U.S. public schools. To combat these disparities we work with Restorative Justice Circles. We believe that Restorative Justice Circles are an effective, positive approach to discipline. Studies find that positive approaches to school discipline at all ages can actually improve students' academic performance, and those studentsare less likely to become involved in the juvenile justice system or have need for behavioral services. - American Institutes for Research. We train our MSW interns to facilitating restorative justice circles so they may develop relationships and build community among youth as they give each participant an equal opportunity to speak and be heard. Unlike traditional discipline models, restorative justice circles also allow individuals to understand how their actions impact others.Nine MSW interns worked directly with youth through one on one counseling sessions, groups and workshops. In total our interns saw 44 formal clients, 34 informal clients (Youth that drop in for crisis or support) 58 youth participated in group counseling and 64 attended workshops. 100% of youth who filled out the satisfaction survey were very satisfied with the support they received from our interns. Historically, SEWI interns and staff have built a connection with other youth at our partner agencies that werent formally signed up for services. These youth areimportant to us. This past year, we have started to track these youth as targeted youth. As our organization has developed and grown out of community need, we look forward to continuing to be innovative to meet the challenges youth and families face in our communities. Our flexibility allows us to serve youth that would otherwise not have access to mental health services and support. Our youth describe services as making them feel valued and listened to because she (MSW intern) was culturally sensitive and I did not have to explain myself too much for her to understand what I was saying or feeling. She (the MSW intern) was a true gift to me.</Desc>

<Desc>2) Staff Training & DevelopmentSEWI helps build the knowledge base of youth development organizations and other companies by coordinating and facilitating trainings and workshops focused on promoting the social and emotional wellness of the individuals. Through in person or live virtual trainings SEWI trained 600 youth development professionals (YDP) and educators. YDPs and educators are often inexperienced and under prepared when it comes to dealing with social and emotional issues.SEWI has been able to provide comprehensive training that helps YDPs and educators mitigate issues such as creating a culture of wellness, positive youth communication, self care &leadership, suicide, mandated reporting and many other topics. Knowing that youth are facing unique challenges we ensure that our trainings provide the support that is needed for the adults they interact with on a daily basis.93 individuals participated in one of our three pre-recorded training through our Teachable platform. These trainings cover Intro to Social & Emotional Wellness, Group Facilitation, Creating Programs & Impact and Youth Stages of Development. While the interest for these prerecorded training has decreased, we are still seeing an interest in the utilization of this tool by youth organizations, mostly Boys & Girls Clubs across California. Our goal is to update our training offerings through Teachable and offer a training package for organization's new hires.</Desc>

<Desc>3) Curriculum Development To complement our middle school curriculum Social & Emotional Learning For Youth(SELFY) we created a SELFY Teen edition. SELFY teen was developed through our work with the UCLA First Star Bruins Scholars program that provides services to foster youth. After participating in SELFY Teen edition, youth reported: I like how I got to understand myself more by identifying the boundaries that I have and ways to have a healthy relationship. It helped me to discover the true meaning of empathy and the significant difference between sympathy and empathy. 78% of teens would recommend SELFY Teen Edition to a friend. 83% of teens noticed positive changes about themselves after participating in SELFY Teen Edition. Every site that participated in the SELFY program saw growth in every competency area. SELFY middleschool and teen edition are now available through our website to the community.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>As an organization whose main priority is the wellness of youth and support of staff that serve those youth, we knew that we had to take action. Below is a list of the current programs and changes we have made as a response to COVID-19. Our goal is to continue to provide most of these services beyond the pandemic. 1)Telehealth - staff and interns continue to virtually support youth that need counseling services. If youth can and want to continue past the intern time we are offering continued support. SEWI continues to provide meaningful internships for the interns and is working with universities to plan for next year's program, prepared to adjust to on line and distance programs should the need arise again.2)SELFY On line - weekly social and emotional learning activities for youth adapted from our SELFY curriculum that is offered free of charge to youth and families who wish to participate. 3)Weekly newsletters - that highlight resources, activities, recipes and good news to help people navigate through the Covid-19 pandemic for community members. These are sent to all on our contact list as well as through our social media platforms. 4)Launched care@sewi - email where community members can ask for extra support for either themselves or others. SEWI staff connect and support these individuals. 5)Partner Staff Support - working with organizational leadership to provide wellness activities and group check ins to staff. 6)Wellness Toolkit - we are working with program partners to help with the anticipated transition of staff and youth going back to sites after having been isolated in their homes. 7)Kollab, Leadership Master Class - SEWI is working with the LA Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs to help facilitate social and emotional wellness workshops for teens across the county. 8)May - Giving Tuesday - SEWI is giving back to the community by providing free on line activities 9)LAUSD Teacher Librarian Training - Training on how to create virtual wellness spaces for teacher librarians across the state. We knew that the pandemic would impact the financial support we would receive fromfoundations and donors. Because of this, we made cuts to our 2020-2021 budget that helped us save for our future while never compromising the integrity of our programs. It is still our main priority to continue to support our community through creative and adaptive ways to ensure all have support for their social and emotional wellbeing. We were aware that through the pandemic, mental health issues were on the rise andthe stigma that continues to be placed on them makes it even more difficult for people to seek support. Therefore, during mental health awareness month in May, we partnered with a local jeweler to design a bracelet that would represent 3 of the pillars we believe help people through mental illness: awareness, treatment and support. These bracelets were on sale to our community members but beyond raising funds our goal was to have our community members proudly wear the bracelets in solidarity with anyone that may be suffering with a mental illness or has a loved one that is suffering with one. We know that through these turbulent times youthand partners need a consistent support structure and that is what SEWI has been and will continue to be with your support</ExplanationTxt>
