The Foundation's VP of Marketing and Donor Development works full-time to attract new and additional public support on a continuous basis. The VP maintains a bona fide program for solicitation of funds from the general population by: 1.) working with planning teams to create events where the community can attend to learn more about the Foundation and it's giving options; 2.) working with financial planners to encourage end-of-year gifts to the foundation as well as testamentary gifts 3) Speaking to civic clubs, churches and agencies about the Foundation; 4) Grant writing; 5) Quarterly newsletter is mailed to more than 2,500 people soliciting donations; 6) Social media encourages donations from the general population for specific projects as well as for general Foundation grantmaking; 7)meetings with individuals, families, and corporations to secure financial commitments; 8.) Local newspaper articles detailing grants of the foundation and how the community may give 9.) Billboard inviting gifts on a major highway in our community.Actual percentage of public support for 2021, and totals for the previous few years? 2018 - 10.17%; 2019 - 10.18%; 2020 - 12.22%: 2021 - 13.36%Facts that show that we have a significant number of donors? The Foundation has been in existence since 1995 and has received gifts from 2,993 unique donors. In 2021 alone, 457 unique donors gave the following gifts: 219 Gifts of $500+; 469 Gifts of $100 to $499; and 497 gifts of less than $100. Facts show how our governing body continues to represent the broad interests of the public rather than the personal and private interests of a limited number of donors. The governing body of the Foundation consists of eleven individuals who are representative of the broad interests of the public. They have special knowledge and expertise in the disciplines important to the operations of the Foundation. The Foundation has seven areas of grantmaking focus that cover a wide variety of interests because our donors have a wide variety of interests, and we want to appeal to the public at large. Breakdown includes Arts & Humanities - 12.2%; Children and Youth - 11.4%; Disaster Relief - 2.7%; Education - 15.3%; Health and Human Services - 9.0%; Recreation - 4.7% and Social Welfare - 43.9%We awarded the following grants over the last four years: in 2018 we awarded 220 grants to 97 organizations totaling $3,682,667; in 2019, 284 grants to 100 organizations totaling $3,181,020; in 2020, 180 grants to 94 organizations totaling $2,373,179; and in 2021, 151 grants to 103 organizations totaling $3,838,641. Availability of public facilities or servicesThe Foundation owns and operates The Bankhead House & Heritage Center, a museum in which people gather to experience a diverse range of exhibits and events. The BHHC offers a series of exhibits each year to reach all types of people and interests. We publicize in our local newspaper inviting the community to come see each exhibit. The Foundation grants to our local school systems each year to provide transportation for classrooms to tour Heritage Center exhibits. The Heritage Center's collection is made up entirely of donated artifacts and memorabilia significant to the area we serve. Our Amphitheater serves as an arts and cultural location for our community with classes, concerts, outdoor movies, plays, storytelling and cultural gatherings aimed toward advancing the arts and history in Walker County. These are also publicized in our community newspaper and on social media and provided to the general public for free.Facts that show that our grants continue to be available to the public on a wide basis-It is widely known with our nonprofit organizations that WACF has two grant cycles per year with deadlines on March 1 and September 1. We are not a large community, so the WACF serves as the primary source of income for the organizations that applied in 2021. WACF's general unrestricted grantmaking fund, the Community Fund, awarded grants to 66 organizations in 2021. A press release is sent to our local newspaper announcing the grant window and is communicated to WACF's Nonprofit Council, a 70+ ad-hoc organization council. The Foundation also has a grant window that is always open for grants less than $5,000, grants dealing with disaster relief, COVID and poverty. Nonprofit organizations and community partners often use our facilities for meetings, trainings and events. Facts that show that the public continues to be involved in our choices of programs to support. In 2021, WACF utilized an 11 person Grant Review Team to interview grant applicants and make funding recommendations to our Board of Directors. These Team members represent a cross-section of Walker area individuals dedicated to asking hard questions and giving thoughtful advice to our board. None of the Review Team members hold Donor Advised Funds with us. They are unbiased advisors focused on the strength of the grant before them. WACF pulls together community members to discuss various topics throughout the year for our Strategic plan initiatives as well as for other community problems that arise. More than 150 people participated in these meetings in 2021 alone. The Bankhead House & Heritage Center (BHHC) is admission free and open to the public and advised by a Council which is comprised of local citizens who advise and assist in the development of the BHHC's exhibits, event, and its grounds. The WACF is one of the anchor organizations of Health Action Partnership (HAP). HAP identified funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant to support a strategic planning process. Local organizations met regularly to conduct a needs assessment, collect comprehensive data, and develop the multi-year strategic plan presented in this report. In 2021 alone, the Foundation led a team in Walker County to create a marketing campaign to increase the number of foster families in Walker County. We also have a unique three- person team that reviews grant applications from nonprofits that focus on the Onward Grant Cycle which helps support families that need a boost to become economically stable. Most recently, the Foundation has recruited our collegiate nursing program to help local doctors' offices, pharmacies, and the hospital to put on vaccine clinics. The HAP was also the nexus for The Healing Network (THN), another loosely structured organization driven by the WACF and dedicated to the planning and implementation of data driven and effective solutions to the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) problems in our area that are the nation's worst when examining opioid use and dependence.
