A majority of OKF programs provided virtual activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic and campus closures in Oakland. Even during an unprecedented pandemic year, OKF achieved the following:Representing Educated Active Leaders Having a Righteous Dream (REAL HARD) Youth Leadership Program is a stipended after school youth development and youth organizing program that engaged 73 student leaders, grades 9-12, at 4 high schools. Youth participated in virtual chapter meetings and community building activities after school, and conducted youth participatory action research surveying 1,500 student peers for public high schools on their input on a safe return to in-person school. REAL HARD met 2x weekly with students from Castlemont, Fremont, Oakland High, and Oakland Technical High Schools. Youth Organizing Council (YOC) convened 15 student leaders across campuses in a summer program and each week during the school year. YOC provided leadership development and youth organizing support for leaders to develop plans to advocate on behalf of Oakland Youth Vote. YOC leaders encouraged eligible Oakland residents to register to vote, and then engaged voters through phonebanking and outreach to provide information about ballot Measure QQ- Oakland Youth Vote, which passed in November 2020 with support from 67% of the public. The historic passage of Measure QQ lowered the voting age for Oakland School Board Elections to include 16 and 17 year olds, which goes into effect in 2022 school board elections.Peers Advising Students to Succeed (PASS-2) was transformed from a school day, in-person peer academic mentoring program to an entirely online curriculum in 2020. Across Castlemont and Fremont, 35 mentors worked with staff over Zoom, and then mentors recorded videos to share workshop information virtually with 9th grade peers. The workshops were distributed through 9th grade teachers and taught 9th graders about college entrance/high school graduation A-G requirements, transcript literacy, and insights into navigating academic obstacles to achieve goals. OKF served as the Lead Agency for Castlemont High Schools Knight Success and Knight Time Programs that served over 446 youth after school annually (111% of our target participation) with 120 students engaging in online, hybrid or socially-distanced in person programming per day. OKFs Castlemont programs offer comprehensive college, career, and community readiness programming including stipended internships and CastleWorks activities aligned to school day academies, as well as academic support, credit recovery, support for International and Newcomer students and their families, health and fitness, after school enrichment, positive youth development, and family engagement activities. Justice For Oakland Students (J4OS) Coalition was founded by OKF in 2017, and OKF served as the fiscal sponsor of J4OS until December 2020. OKF continues to be a lead organization and coalition member of J4OS. The coalition is made up of students, parents/families of Oakland youth, teacher allies, and staff from community-based organizations working to center the experience of Black, Latinx, Special Education, Newcomer or International, and other marginalized student identities in city-wide or district policies and campaigns. Direct political campaign activities included staff time engaging and preparing youth leaders involved in outreach for Measure QQ, staff time spent sharing communications over social media, and OKF management of the Oakland Youth Vote website.
