The tax-exempt purposes of the Organization and the nature in which it operates is described in Note 1. Management's assertion is that there are no uncertain tax positions and the Organizations continue to operate in compliance with their tax-exempt purposes. However, the Organizations are subject to income tax on their unrelated business income after related expenses. North American Spine Society does sell advertising in its journals as well as at its annual conference registration listing of participants which is considered unrelated to its tax-exempt purpose. Based on net income from these activities, the Society incurred and paid $294,778 in unrelated business income taxes for the year ended December 31, 2022.
