The advocacy work promoted the organization's mission by building awareness, educating and persuading external stakeholders on policy matters of interest to SCHS, its sponsored entities and the larger community. As a Catholic health system with diverse ministries including a hospital, grant making foundation, elder care and community outreach organizations, SCHS was called to speak out on behalf of poor and vulnerable persons, including working to ensure that society increases access to physical and behavioral health services for everyone while protecting the dignity of life. Living the mission, this call asked SCHS to be active al local, state and federal levels where health and other domestic policy decisions are made. SCHS is the sole member of a licenses acute care hospitals, St Vincent Charity Medical Center (SVCMC) in Cleveland, Ohio. It is also the sole member of two elder care facilities: Regina Health Center (RHC) and Light of Hearts Villa (LOHV). RHC is a skilled nursing and assisted living facility established to serve aging vowed religious men and women in the Diocese of Cleveland and Youngstown. LOHV is an assisted/independent living facility which also provided respite and memory care. SCHS is the sole member of three grant making foundation in Ohio and South Carolina. Each foundation endeavors to understand the root cause of poverty, nurture the growth of healthy communities, emphasizes youth and family, and measure the outcomes of these efforts. Based on the needs of the community they service, the foundations strategic initiatives focus on low income housing, early childhood education, fatherhood in the family, homelessness and religious communities. Collectively, the foundations award over 177 grants totaling over $7.88 million in 2022. Other health and human services and education-related organizations within SCHS include: Joseph's Home, a residential care center providing medical respite to homeless men and women in Cleveland; Early Childhood Resource Center, which provides resources and training for people working with children in Canton, Ohio; Healthy Learners, a state-wide organization providing health care resources for children in low income families across South Carolina; and South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families, a state-wide organization supporting initiatives to re-engage fathers in the lives of their children. Overall, in 2022 inspired by a devotion to healing and a steadfast and deep commitment to our communities, SCHS and its family of ministries provides over $35 million in community benefits. This number includes $24 million in charity care and unpaid costs of Medicaid and $11 million in other community health services, including health professional education, community building activities and medically disadvantaged members of the community based of the Catholic Health Association model.
