The festival comprised eleven concerts held on Monday evenings from June 27 through September 5. The theme of the 2022 festival was Women in Music, presenting outstanding women organists of different musical styles from all over the world. As always, one concert featured a silent movie and one was a rock concert with local musicians. The Spreckels Organ Society paid for the artists' fees, hotel accommodations and some meals. There is never an admission charge for these concerts. 80812 0 0 The Spreckels Organ Society's artistic director is also a city of San Diego contractor. The city pays the civic organist/artistic director for the basic one-hour concerts on Sundays, and the Spreckels Organ Society pays for extra expenses such as programs, additional musicians, vocalists and holiday decorations.The Spreckels Organ Society also provides additional programs and concerts throughout the year. In addition to the San Diego International Summer Organ Festival, the Spreckels Organ Society presented several special concerts on Saturdays and holidays during 2022, including Halloween, December Nights and Opera4Kids performances. The Spreckels Organ Society also pays for an organ curator for special concerts and the summer festival. The Evenson Fund was a bequest from the founder of the Spreckels Organ Society, which the board designated as an endowment to be used for maintenance of the organ and for compensation of the artistic director. The Nichols Fund was a bequest that the board designated as an endowment to be used for expenses of the San Diego International Summer Organ Festival. The Operating Expense Endowment Fund was designated by the board as an endowment fund to be used for general expenses. The Organ Bench Endowment Fund was created in 2021 when the Spreckels Organ Society received a gift from an anonymous donor. The donor specified how the fund was to be used (for the artistic director's compensation), but did not prescribe when or how much could be spent. Blackinton and Associates has a contract with the city of San Diego to maintain the Spreckels Organ. The Spreckels Organ Society also pays L.W. Blackinton & Associates for curator services during concerts (less than $10,000). A curator must be onsite whenever the organ's protective door is open. A third trustee, William Willis, is a part-time, on-call employee of L.W. Blackinton & Associates. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 4 During 2023, the board of trustees voted to adopt formal policies regarding whistleblowers, document retention, conflict of interest, confidentiality, board compensation, nondiscrimination, gift acceptance and agreement of board member expectations. A copy was provided to the trustees to review and suggest changes or corrections. The board voted to approve the return.
