<Desc>The AAMC operates the Music Resource Center, an after-school music program for teenagers in the Duluth Superior Area. The mission is to educate and inspire young people, and through music equip them with life skills for the future. We accomplish this mission through music education and performance opportunities, as well as life skill mentoring. The MRC, now in its 13th year of operation, has received three grants to allow the AMRC to hire a full time Program Director. The goal is to be open once again in-person in 2023.</Desc>

<Desc>The Armory Arts and Music Center (AAMC) had a good year in 2022 towards its vision of creating a mixed-use project in the Armory, centered around a public market/food hall in the Drill Hall, and including a Shared Use Commercial Kitchen. The AAMC was awarded a $672,000 Minnesota Department of Economic Development grant for removal of hazardous materials from the Armory. Received a $250,000 grant from the Minnesota Historical Society for partial reroofing of the Armory. Held a Community Kitchen informational meeting that was attended by 56 city and community leaders demonstrating the need and enthusiasm for the facility. Applied for a $750,000 Minnesota DEED Main Street grant, which was awarded in January. 2023. Continued to work with developer Sherman and Associates on the design, funding, and redevelopment of the Armory project.</Desc>

<FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt>AAMC - 990 Facts and Circumstances - Tax Year 2022 October 4, 2023 Schedule A - Part II, Section C, Line 17A In 2022 the Armory Arts & Music Center (AAMC), a 501(c)(3) organization, continued to make great progress towards fulfilling its mission to preserve the historic Duluth Armory building, and its value to American culture and the arts, while encouraging its reuse, placing emphasis on arts and education. The AAMC's public funding percentage fell below 33-1/3% due to an unusually large and generous donation in 2018. That donation was made to the AAMC in order to pay for the structural rehabilitation of a19,000sf structural concrete floor that was critical to making the Armory safe and usable. That donation allowed the AAMC to utilize a $250K grant from the Minnesota Historical Society. The structural floor rehabilitation project was the biggest building project that the AAMC has undertaken to date, and its completion in the Spring of 2020 positioned the project well for redevelopment and led to Sherman Associates, a well-respected regional developer from Minneapolis, agreeing to lead the AAMC in the bringing the Armory back into community service! The AAMC applied for and received a number of grants in 2022 including a $672K grant to clean up asbestos and lead paint from the MN Department of Employment and Economic Development. Funding from the grant will be reimbursed as the work proceeds starting in 2023. The AAMC also received three grants from local and State organizations, totaling $42K, to fund hiring of a Director for our Music Resource Center music program for area youth. Much of 2022 was spent building local public support for the Armory project. Our organization met with numerous community and State leaders to raise awareness of the project. The City of Duluth was especially helpful in their support including commitments to TIF funding. The AAMC also worked with State Representatives and Senators to plan to ask the State legislature for support in 2023 and beyond. The AAMC also began serious discussions regarding the exhibit/tribute spaces to be created within the Armory once it is renovated. One of these spaces we call the 'Hall of Heroes' will be dedicated to the military personnel that trained and served at the Armory. We have begun discussions with the Minnesota Military Museum and the St. Louis County Veteran's Hall who have generously been donating their time while collaborating on the exhibit. Another exhibit area will be dedicated to artists that performed or were inspired at the Armory and we have been meeting with local musicians who played at the Armory to collect their stories. We have also been communicating with the Bob Dylan Archives in Tulsa regarding our special area dedicated to Duluth native Bob Dylan. The AAMC's work to create museum exhibits to tell the stories of the entertainers and musicians who performed at the Armory, as well as the building's rich military history, continues. The AAMC has also begun discussions regarding creating a shared use commercial community kitchen in the Armory. The kitchen would provide local food entrepreneurs a place to begin their business, or provide additional space to expand existing businesses. Our initial kickoff meeting was attended by 56 city, community, and food industry leaders. The two main arts and educational activities that the AAMC is involved with include the Music Resource Center (MRC), an after-school music program for area teenagers, and the Armory Annex Art Studios which provides affordable studio space to area artists. Arts and education are part of the AAMC's mission, and while these activities continued in 2022, both were affected by the Covid virus. The MRC program was in its 12th year of operation in 2022, though the program was scaled back to on-line lessons due to Covid. While the MRC does charge a nominal fee for the lessons, no student is turned away for financial reasons. In 2022, 75% of our students received full scholarships so that their lessons were free. The MRC received funding and donations from a number of sources including local foundations, businesses, individuals, the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council (State funded), the Minnesota State Arts Board, and other charitable organization that fund youth-oriented programs. The MRC typically also raises money by having fundraising concert including our Buddy Holly/Winter Dance Party themed event, and our Spring CD Release party, a fundraiser where local musicians donate their time and perform along with students, but these activities were canceled due to Covid concerns. We look forward to hiring a new Director for our MRC music program and reopening in-person in 2023. The Armory Annex Arts Studios is currently the home to 7 artists or arts organizations. These artists pay rent, which earns the AAMC a modest income. The public can come in and watch the artists work and buy directly from the artists. The blacksmithing organization at the Armory Annex, called Forging Community, offers classes to the public and provide demonstrations at numerous local events. One of the AAMC's biggest achievements in 2022 was the hiring of a Fundraising and Outreach Director which doubled the staff from one to two! The AAMC engages in numerous fundraising activities during the year including fundraising concerts/events, donations through our website, donations through our Facebook page, direct outreach, and participating in GiveMN and Giving Tuesday. The AAMC's annual appeal is sent out to over 400 subscribers on our mailing list and to the over 2,000 friends on our social media pages. Volunteers are an important part of the AAMC. Our governing body consists of 11 Board of Directors who are all volunteers and come from a variety of backgrounds including a former State Senator, an architect, a small business owner, a former advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a contractor, and a scientist. We often have local college students who volunteer in our office or at our MRC music program. We also have volunteers from the community and colleges help out doing tasks at the Armory such as cleaning or grounds work during the year. The AAMC's staff and Board members are frequently asked to share their knowledge of people and events linked with the Armory with the public through lectures, guiding tours, and at local events such as the Duluth Dylan Fest. The AAMC is a supporting organization and assists in organizing the Duluth Dylan Fest, a week-long festival which celebrates the artistry of Bob Dylan, who was born in Duluth, and was inspired by Buddy Holly at the Armory. Dylan Fest attracts over a thousand attendees from all over the US and even internationally.</FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt>
