Yet there are few ways for people in a closed Iran to use technology to support civic activism. U4I wanted to bridge the gap in technology and social change. In the spring of 2016, they launched IranCubator, a two-year contest-focused project to leverage and build the capacity of both civil society and developers. They developed about a dozen applications that directly empower Iranian citizens to connect, organize, share and disseminate critical information. Apps that range from documenting and reporting on domestic abuse, keeping Iranian voters informed and giving them an easy to use and practical platform to share their voice. In 2020, they launched the second round of this project IranCubator 2.0. 453418 Safe Activism and CampaignsSafe Activism: Reducing the Risks and Impact of Arrest grew out of U4Is work with activists in Iran facing arrest, arbitrary detention, and violence at the hands of the Islamic Republic for their peaceful civic and political activism. Interviews with over 30 former Iranian activists were used to identify essential tactics to avoid arrest, incrimination and imprisonment. Safe Activism delivers information in multiple ways, including video, infographics, and booklets. 423252 Human Rights BarometerThe Human Rights Barometer (HRB); an interactive platform that visualizes the broadest set of human rights indicators from Iran. The objective of this project is to improve and increase the publicly available data on human rights violations in Iran in an attempt to prevent and respond to human rights abuses. The Human Rights Barometer creates a library of interactive data visualizations on human rights violations in Iran. Its mission is to influence policy and contribute to public discourse by presenting human rights data and trends in an interactive and accessible format. HRB offers a tool for nuanced analysis of the human rights landscape in Iran to support the work of researchers, activists, and advocates.
