<ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp>
<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>STEAM+ is an after-school educational program that provides support to learners in the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. The plus represents our commitment to helping students on a mentoring level as well. Our desire is to see young people not only succeed in these subjects, but also succeed in life. Maths & Science In 2021 we started with 15 Grade 9 learners and 5 tutors. We have subsequently added a new group of 15 Grade 9 learners in 2022, while also following our original group into Grade 10. This meant that the project grew from having 15 learners and 5 tutors in 2021 to 30 learners and 10 tutors in 2022. In 2022 we had a total of 722 sessions of tutoring which was 828 hours of tutoring for the grade 9 and 10 classes combined. This is a significant increase compared to the previous year where we had a total of 279 sessions and 314 hours of tutoring. This paints a picture of the growth the program had. The growth of the project was quite beneficial to the learners. All the learners improved their marks. The grade 9 group average increase was 11% and the most improved learner increased their mark by 34%. This brought a confidence and belief in the learners that they could do well in math as a number of them were not confident and found math to be difficult and confusing. The grade 10 class was able to pick up where they had left off in 2021. There was a great improvement in attendance and that paid off for the majority of learners. Despite the group not improving on average, compared to their grade 9 marks, we had 10 learners who achieved a mark that was above 90% in the first term. This class had an average of 80% which was close to double of their school peers who managed a 43% grade average. We also offered physical science tutoring sessions to some of the learners. Whilst we weren't able to offer an ideal amount of sessions, we saw an average of 74%, which was considerably higher than that of their school peers who managed a 48% average. The tutors also gave extremely positive feedback, whilst we didn't get as many ten out of tens in the project ratings, they found being a part of the project a great experience. Some spoke about how this brought about purpose for them and how they are grateful to be a part of the project. Beyond these the tutors felt that they had all the resources they needed and had the support they needed from YIT which for us means that we are also making a positive impact in their lives. Here are some quotes from the learners and tutors. Robotics Program We partner with Educate 4.0, a group of students at Stellenbosch University, to run a Robotics program with a group of Grade 7 students at Devon Valley Primary in Stellenbosch. We use the Educational Lego Sets to introduce the foundational concepts of robotics. Getting exposure to programming and robotics from a young age will really set these learners up for the future of work and inspire them with the possibilities that technology brings. The program was 12 weeks over 3 terms. 31 Volunteers assisted during the year. Over 20 Gr7 learners were part of the program. Butterfly Project In South Africa, a girl's chance of completing school is about 30%, yet with input in the early years before Grade 4, research indicates the success rates increase dramatically. In 2022 we had 10 girls in our program: five in Grade R and five in Grade 1 (in 2023 we will add another five girls, bringing the number to 15). Each girl has been carefully selected based on their family background, financial need, as well as academic need. We prioritize girls who live in a single parent household and the average monthly household income of the girls in our project is $55, which allows us to make a significant impact by not only providing a scholarship for school fees, but also covering their stationery and uniform costs. The program has been a huge success with all the girls improving in their academic foundations. The five girls from Grade R all achieved a 1 or 2 level improvement in all three of the different report categories (numeracy, literacy and life skills). One girl went from all 5's in term 2 to all 7's in term 4 - showing a considerate improvement in all subjects. Another girl went from an average in term 2 of 3.6 to a 5 in term 4. The girls in Grade 1 achieved 1 or 2 levels of improvement in all subjects. One of the girls in our program achieved 7's in all four of her subjects every term. One girl started term 1 with an average of 4.5 and ended term 4 with an average of 5.75. We have also seen a noted difference in their confidence and ability to interact not only with their peers, but also with their teachers and other adults. Here are some comments from a parent and teacher.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
