<Desc>Food Systems & Agriculture--Schools are a key component of Montana's food and agriculture systems. But fresh, quality, locally sourced food is hard to come by in parts of the state due to food-production and processing challenges, declining numbers of food-distribution routes, and reduced numbers of retail food outlets. Even as Montana schools are impacted by these challenges, they find themselves becoming key nutrition and healthcare hubs for their kids and communities. (See below.) To help address these challenges, in FY24 MT-PECH: 1) Created and worked with MT Rural School Networks to assist school food service staff with layers of support, training and resources. As an example, MT-PECH provided 124+ food service staff with trainings to help them source and cook fresh, quality food from scratch, positively impacting the 53,200 kids served by these food service professionals; 2) Helped initiate conversations for a statewide Food Distribution Co-op that can deliver Montana-sourced food and produce to Montana communities. MT-PECH now is actively engaged in the formation of this co-op with other organizations from around the state; and 3) Joined the Montana Steering Committee of the Regional Food Business Center to help build out the middle of Montana's food supply chain to increase the amount of local food processed and available for consumption, especially in rural Montana.</Desc>

<Desc>Nutrition in Schools & Healthcare--In Montana, as other rural health services disappear, schools are stepping up and becoming health and behavioral-health hubs for their communities. More than 80 of these school-based health clinics currently exist, and the number is growing. To support schools' efforts in this area and to bring other collaborators and supporters into the mix, in FY24 MT-PECH partnered with the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services to begin developing a child nutrition dashboard that enables schools and healthcare providers to work collaboratively to get fresh, quality, locally sourced food to kids in all parts of the state. The anticipated launch date for the dashboard is FY26. MT-PECH also helps emerging and existing Prescription Produce Programs in healthcare and supports statewide efforts to to integrate these programs into school clinics and other healthcare settings to improve the health of all Montanans. In FY24, MT-PECH helped develop and host the first-ever statewide Prescription Produce Summit to bring all entities working on these programs together to learn from each other to enhance local programs and partnerships. In addition, MT-PECH provides technical assistance to new and existing programs. To help meet the statewide demand for training and how-to information about Prescription Produce Programs, in FY24 MT-PECH shifted the format of its monthly Partner Group meetings to a learning collaborative for all programs working in the Nutrition in Schools and Healthcare space. The learning collaborative serves both as an educational collaborative and an incubator where Prescription Produce Programs, healthcare providers, funders, and schools can come together to improve nutrition and health outcomes for Montana kids. MT-PECH also helps support nutrition education and cooking classes for school students so more Montana kids and families can prepare and eat fresh, quality food at home.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>The Montana Partnership to End Childhood Hunger Inc. (MT-PECH) completes and reviews its Form 990 in the following way: 1) The MT-PECH Finance & Development Committee reviews MT-PECH's financial statements monthly. The full board reviews the financial statements quarterly. Financial statements are prepared by MT-PECH staff and are reviewed by Your Part-Time Controller (YPTC); 2) The Finance & Development Committee and full board also review the fiscal-year statements, which are used to prepare a DRAFT Form 990. The Finance and Development Committee uses information and checklists from the Council of Nonprofits, the Journal of Accountancy, and Board Source to assist in the review of the DRAFT Form 990; 3) Once the Finance & Development Committee approves the DRAFT Form 990, the draft is sent to the full board for review and questions; 4) Once all board questions are addressed, the DRAFT 990 and fiscal year-end financial statements are sent to an outside, non-YPTC accountant for review. Any needed changes or questions identified by that accountant are sent back to the Finance & Development Committee. The Finance & Development Committee reviews the recommended changes, addresses any questions, and causes the staff to make any needed changes to the DRAFT Form 990, which is then returned to the committee for final approval; 5) After final approval from the Finance & Development Committee, the final Form 990 is sent to the full board for review, accompanied by the comment and review form from the outside accountant, along with committee comments, question resolutions, etc.; 6) The full board reviews, discusses, and votes on the final 990 and may discuss questions with the outside accountant via Zoom as needed; 7) Once the final 990 is approved by the board, it is submitted to the Internal Revenue Service.</ExplanationTxt>
