MAJIC is a coalition of organizations in Michigan that have come together to achieve and actualize Climate Justice for the house of the Great Lakes. MAJIC is a group of organizers, volunteers and professionals creating a sustainable future where the people of Michigan can thrive without suffering the negative physical and economical effects of environmental decline. This included time to recruit and onboard new organizations, create internal structures for how the alliance would operate and communicate (such as with a conflict resolution process), and meetings with elected officials to educate them on the priorities of communities most impacted by climate injustice. This program area also included local community organizing meetings, hosting public educational forums related to the climate crisis and environmental sustainability, as well as partnership with the City of Ann Arbor on its A2Zero initiative to move toward carbon neutrality. 20807 0 0 Hosted educational town halls related to the juvenile and criminal legal system and supported organizing around a report called "Race to Justice" by a grassroots group called Citizens for Racial Equity in Washtenaw (CREW). Some examples of work in this area include: recruiting young people to be panelists in an event called "Poetry and Politics for Youth" where they talked about the importance of young people using their voices by voting. Co-hosted an educational town hall on "Race to Justice" report with local faith leaders. Co-hosted a town hall as part of a group called "Ban the Scan" that was focused on advocating for the Ann Arbor City Council to ban the use of facial recognition technology. This grant money is fund raised specifically for WCS and is granted to WCS after expenses are approved by its steering committee and receipts have been submitted. 0 1 Schedule I, Part I, Line 2 The funds that we grant are to organizations or projects for which we are the fiscal sponsor. The sponsored organization or project's steering committee approves the process for the distribution of funds that they have raised. ICPJ receives the detail and receipt for each approved disbursement and then processes payment. ICPJ keeps the receipts to substantiate each disbursement and keeps records of the profit/loss for the sponsored organization or project. This is typically for organizations or projects that fit within the ICPJ mission that need capacity-building support. Changes to the bylaws clarified the purpose, role, and authority of the Board of Directors. Article V. Board of Directors. Changes to the bylaws provide for ex-officio membership of the staff Director (or Co-Directors) on the Board of Directors, with voting rights unless there is a conflict of interest. Article V. Changes to the bylaws make an exception to the term of members of the Board of Directors: "For Members aged 16-26 who are interested in joining the Board we have a one year term option. Membership and Authority Any person who has made financial contributions to the Organization, or has engaged personally in activities of the Organization, in at least a minimum amount as determined from time to time by the Board, is a Member and is eligible to vote. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors reviewed the draft 990. Staff made changes as needed. The Executive Committee reviews the financial report monthly. The Board Treasurer reviews our monthly account reconciliation and check request binder quarterly. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The compensation for key employees was determined after review of other nonprofit director salaries in the area. A recommendation was made by the Personnel Committee, and then approved by the Board of Directors. For current employees, this process was undertaken in the later half of 2018 and impacted the two Co-Directors. Increases in compensation have been reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors. Form 990, Part XI, Line 9 Rounding error in calculations This was our first time filing a 990. We worked on the return for weeks, had multiple reviews and were on schedule to submit it on time. Because we had to file online, and were taking the care needed to double check responses and calculations. This took a little longer than expected because the questions did not have the same requirements at the paper version that we had drafted. Once everything came together, we were late in filing because the signature file needed to be added to the submission. But it was not until the end of the return that we realized that had to be done during business hours. We are a small organization working to get our IRS filings up to date. We intend to hire an accountant for the FY2022 filing.
