Additional program initiatives have resulted in the standardization of mass decontamination systems and personal protective equipment for all 16 acute-care hospitals in the region. A Regional Medical Coordination System has been created which is used to coordinate diverse medical resources responding to mass casualty incidents (MCI). In 2008, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control recognized Region 5 as a "Model Community Linking EMS and Public Health." The program continues to provide logistical and administrative support to healthcare and public safety agencies. In 2020, as part of the COVID 19 pandemic response, the program administered a COVID 19 call center, a PPE distribution site for region 5, and housed ventilators from the strategic national stockpile.
