Its historic 900-seat theater, built in 1878, is the oldest in New Hampshire. Its second venue, built in 2011 and renovated in 2022, is The Lounge, a modern 116-seat theater across the street. In addition to presenting diverse and relevant programming, TMH hosts community fundraisers and celebrations for the benefit of more than 60 local nonprofits. Form 990, Part III, Line 1 Continuation COVID's impact on TMH, a venue dedicated to the live performing arts, continues to linger. FY22 revenues reflect challenges including programming limitations as well as public concern regarding attendance at events and the uncertain state of the economy. The emergence of new variants in the fall of 2021 forced TMH to cancel the organization's annual holiday presentation of a Broadway-quality musical for a second year. The pandemic's devastating impact on the film industry left TMH with few new releases to offer patrons. Authors and their agents were reluctant to travel, limiting literary programming. TMH scaled back the signature School Day Series of matinees for young people as schools were still limiting field trips and professional youth theater groups were touring on reduced schedules. Physical space also limited TMH's ability to present offerings to patrons; TMH closed the small venue at 131 Congress Street in March 2020 due to social distancing concerns, and kept it closed throughout FY22. Patrons have been slow to return even to TMH's larger venue, resulting in lower ticket sales and concessions sales. The community's slow return to public events has also impacted rental revenues as several regular renters declined to host their events in person once again this past year. Reduced programming, in combination with the economic downturn, translated to reduced participation in TMH's Corporate Partnership program as some past partners were not able to continue or return to previous levels of support, and attracting new partners was difficult. On a positive note, by motivating TMH staff to consider our venues in a new way, the pandemic inspired programming adjustments, three of which TMH has incorporated into programming moving forward. In the warmer months TMH turned Chestnut Street, the side street where our Historic Theater is situated, into an outdoor event venue for a series dubbed Live Under the Arch. Using these same principles, in the colder months TMH used the stage of the Historic Theater itself as a new venue, resulting in the intimate Stage Door Cabaret series. Investments in equipment, including a small stage truss system, allowed TMH to continue to host events in these and other non-traditional locations. TMH also found opportunity by expanding beyond the physical, investing in live streaming capabilities to enhance access. By providing virtual options, TMH has been able to continue to engage artists and audiences who are reluctant or physically unable to attend events in person, fulfilling an important aspect of our mission to serve our community. Additional good fortune came to TMH in the form of continued support from two areas during this difficult time: the SBA Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) program and our dedicated Members. TMH received an SVOG award of $1,465,364.95 in July 2021 (with $363,838.00 of that spent toward FY21) and a supplemental award of $892,489.98 in October 2021. The organization has already begun to use these funds as they were intended: to rebuild the staff (reduced from 28 FT to 15 at the height of the pandemic), counter months of reduced audience capacity, and undertake essential operational and capital projects put on hold due to the pandemic. TMH's members continue to come to the organization's aid during this uncertain time, a commitment that did not slow with the January 2022 departure of longtime Director of Institutional Advancement Gail VanHoy Carolan. TMH was fortunate to welcome a new Director of Development that same month when Mary Beth Johnson stepped into the role. Under her careful watch, contributed income continues to grow, with individual giving surpassing past years and sponsorship heading toward a return to pre-pandemic levels. TMH's Historic Theater, a point of pride in New England and recognized as an American Treasure by the U.S. Senate, has been beautifully restored and thoughtfully expanded, winning numerous design awards. It is carefully looked after with a mix of professional staff and volunteer board members with superior facility and building skills. As part of TMH's most current strategic plan, fundraising and construction planning efforts commenced in 2019 to address critical infrastructure improvements for the Historic Theater's HVAC system (completed in 2020); an upgraded theatrical lighting system (completed in 2021); and backstage green room space and artist dressing rooms (completed in September 2022).
