The Kansas City Museum property is being designed as a welcoming, inclusive, and responsive gathering place where visitors learn about the past, present, and future of the City. What sets the Kansas City Museum apart from other institutions is its educational as well as civic purpose with a commitment to being the "Home of the Whole Story" where perspectives and experiences of individuals and communities that are often underrepresented and overlooked are acknowledged, honored, and elevated to tell more complete and accurate stories of the City's complex history. The Kansas City Museum believes that museums have the capacity to play a vital role in the equitable development of neighborhoods, parks, and public spaces, and can be catalysts for social justice and positive systemic change. The Kansas City Museum endeavors to create a more just, inclusive, and unified City by creating exhibits, programs, and experiences that center on the often untold or under-told stories of individuals who have endured historical harms and exclusions. In this way, the Museum plays a part in significantly advancing the City's growth, vitality, and creativity. In October 2021, the Kansas City Museum completed Stage I of its expansive restoration and renovation, which was the restoration and renovation of Corinthian Hall (approximately 34,000 square feet). Corinthian Hall reopened to the public on October 21, 2021, with all new history-and humanities-based exhibits, art installations, programs, experiences, and amenities including a retail store, a café, and a soda fountain. Corinthian Hall reopened during the pandemic. From October to December 2021 we operated at 30% capacity with timed tickets. We enforced the City's mask mandate guidelines. We had 6,694 visitors including guests that attended public programs and events. From January to April 2022 We operated at 50% capacity with timed tickets through March 31, 2022. We recommended face coverings and we had 7,016 visitors. In addition to reopening Corinthian Hall, the Kansas City Museum is in the process of an expansive, multi-stage, multi-year restoration and renovation of the entire property, which includes all the original buildings except the Greenhouse (which was removed in the 1950s). Each stage of the project will open to the public upon completion. The levy does not exceed the rate of two cents on each one hundred dollars of assessed valuation of real and tangible personal property located within the city. Because the Museum receives this tax revenue, it must provide free general admission. After the City deducts its financial obligations from the levy revenue, the Kansas City Museum receives the remaining revenue to use for operating the Museum. If there is a fund balance at the end of the fiscal year (i.e. the Museum spends less than the levy revenue), that fund balance rolls over into the next fiscal year. The City deducts the following annually: debt service fee of approximately $425,000; property insurance of approximately $11,000; finance and administrative fee of approximately $50,000; county collection fee of approximately $33,000. In addition, the City holds an agreement with Union Station for the management of the collection including associated fees of approximately $200,000. The Museum budgets for receiving about $1 million from the levy annually, and that funding is used for operating and managing the Museum including but not limited to utilities, facility maintenance, general operations, personnel, and programs.
