The spring meeting normally attracts between 3,000 and 4,000 scientists, which represent the target audience directly benefiting from the scientific offerings of the Society. The two smaller conferences normally attract between 125 and 350 scientists who represent the number of persons benefiting directly from the Society's symposia and workshops.The Society publishes 16 scientific journals that serve as the vehicle for the dissemination of the investigator's research. The Society publishes more than 25,000 pages and receives over 5,500 manuscripts for consideration. Each manuscript has an average of three authors, representing a population of over 17,000 scientists who benefit from the society's publications. In addition, there are over 5,000 subscriptions to the 13 journals self-published by the Society. The majority of the subscribers are libraries providing a large target audience for the journals. The purpose of the Society is to expand knowledge related to biological function through scientific and professional publications and electronic media, education, science policy, scientific meetings, program development, and member services. The Society champions the importance of physiology for achieving breakthroughs in health, disease and the understanding of life. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6 The Society consists of regular, honorary, emeritus, student and trainee, and institutional and corporate members. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7a The Governing Body of the American Physiological Society is elected by ballot by the membership. Only dues-paying members in good standing can vote and hold elected office. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7b Amendments to Bylaws must first be approved by the Council. Following approval by Council, amendments will be publicized to allow members to discuss the amendment by electronic discussion board for thirty days. Dues paying members then will have an additional two weeks to vote by electronic ballot. The Bylaws may be amended after approval by a majority of the dues-paying members who vote, presuming a quorum is present. Findings of the study are used to provide guidance to APS' Council (board of directors), who are responsible for approving annual salary and wage scale increases. The Executive Director's salary is approved by a smaller group of the Council (Executive Committee). In addition, the APS periodically engages a third party consultant to review job descriptions for each position to ensure compensation levels are appropriate for the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties of each position.
