CBHR has grown from a fledgling organization with only a few volunteers to a federally recognized non-profit organization. Over the course of 30 years CBHR has rescued,rehabilitated, and rehomed over 2500 basset hounds.CBHR is focused on eliminating needless euthanasia of basset hounds. Regardless of how a basset ends up in a shelter, whether having been dumped by an uncaring owner or picked up as a stray, we believe each deserves a chance for a healthy life in a loving home. We have expanded our program to accept bassets that owners no longer want or are unable to care for.All bassets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for heartworm disease if needed, and given a clean bill of health before being cleared for adoption. They stay in foster homes to facilitate emotional healing, address medical needs, manage behavioral issues, promote socialization and create an environment of love and safety for the dogs. Potential adopters are screened with a veterinary reference and a home visit. The goal is to match each of our bassets with a loving, forever home. We make a life-long commitment to all dogs entering the CBHR program. After adoption, if the adopter cannot keep the dog, we will take him back to care for him and to find him a new home. Once a CBHR Basset, always a CBHR Basset. 2024 In Review: Number of Adoptions: 75 Number of New Dogs Taken In: 72 Number of CBHR Dogs Returned: 5 Total Number of Dogs Cared For: 111 Average Number of Dogs in CBHR Care Each Month: 36 Average Expense per Dog: $2,641. Number of Adoption Applications Received: 143. Donors Contributed $52,145.The Carolina Basset Hound Rescue program is comprised of four main areas: Fostering, Adoption, Donations, and Events. Fostering and Adoption Once our volunteer staff is notified of a basset in need, arrangements are made to retrieve him from the shelter or the former owner. He will then be moved into an assigned foster home where he will be provided necessary medical care. The foster home will help him blossom into a loving, well- mannered family member. Adoptions are completed once his medical needs are met and he is once again healthy and microchipped. Donations The CBHR program would not be able to rescue the dogs it does without continued financial supports from our friends. There are many ways to contribute and you will find one that matches your donation style by visiting our donation page. A minimum donation is requested at the time of adoption. However, most adoption donations equal only 10% of the average expenses of each of our dogs. Kind and generous supporters of our work must make up the rest. Events Each year CBHR participates and hosts several events throughout North and South Carolina. These events are a great way for us to showcase our dogs and for the volunteers to catch up with their basset-loving friends.
